WILMINGTON, Del. - The Goldey-Beacom women's volleyball team was off to a 2-0 start against Dominican on Sat. afternoon, but allowed Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference rival Dominican to come back and win the match, 3-2.
Sophomore outside hitter Roni Shaner and freshman setter Monica Dempsey once again led the way for the Lightning (2-2), with Shaner recording a triple-double with 13 kills, 10 assists and 15 digs and Dempsey a double-double with 14 assists and 19 digs. The Lightning attack also feature inspired play by graduate student Christine Hudock, who had 29 digs, three assists and two service aces.
However, it was not enough to put away the Chargers (2-2) for a third and decisive match, as Michelle Fiorvanti (22 kills, three service aces, seven kills) led Dominican to three straight wins.
Up 2-0 in the match, the Lightning held a 20-19 advantage in the third set before surrendering six straight points to lose the match and let Dominican back in the game.
Riding the momentum of their late success in set three, the Chargers roared past GBC 25-15 in the fourth set to force a decisive fifth game.
GBC held an early 7-2 advantage in the fifth and final game, but forfeited five straight points as Dominican came back to tie the score at seven apiece.
The two teams traded points and were knotted in a 10-10 tie, but it was Dominican who would score five of the next six points to win the match.
