ASTON, Pa. – Coming off its most successful season in the history of the program in 2008-09, head coach Joe Kissel's Goldey-Beacom women's tennis team picked up right where it left off, cruising to an 8-1 victory over Neumann in the season opener.
The Lightning (1-0) took two of the three doubles matches and then swept the six singles matches for the convincing victory.
In doubles play, GBC's No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Marina Sales and freshman Blanca Sancho bolted past Neumann's Ali DeTolla and Lindsey Ravior, 8-1. Then freshmen Melanie Bonomo and Vanessa León took care of Michelle Steward and Jasper Thompson, 8-4 at No. 2 doubles before sophomore Jennifer Jones and freshman Anastasia Chibrikova lost a tough match, 8-2 at No. 3.
Bonomo, in her first collegiate match, got the nod at No. 1 singles and she came through with a 6-3, 6-2 win over DeTolla. Sales followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles over Jasper Thompson.
Sancho, also playing in her first collegiate match, was dominant at No. 3 singles, defeating Allison Trout 6-0, 6-0. León then defeated Steward 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.
The Pereira twins, Luciana and Daniela, closed out at the match with wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Luciana defeated Ravior 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and Daniela defeated Maria Evans, 6-1, 6-2.
