PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team had its back against the wall Thurs. night at Chestnut Hill College.
On the verge of losing their eighth straight match, the Lighning faced match-point, down 24-21 in the fourth game. But the Lightning mounted an incredible comeback to win the set 30-28, and then carried that momentum into the next set, winning 15-9 to claim a thrilling Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory.
GBC improves to 3-8 (1-3 CACC) on the year as Chestnut Hill fell to 2-9 (0-3 CACC).
Sophomore outside hitter Roni Shaner led the Lightning offensively with 11 kills and three service aces. She also supplied nine assists. Freshman setter Monica Dempsey directed the Lightning with 19 assists, while also providing 16 digs.
Defensively, junior specialist A.J. Hicks had 28 digs and senior Christine Hudock had 11. Hudock is now just 12 digs short of 1,000 for her career at 988.
The Lightning stole an early lead, taking the first game 25-17 behind a balanced team effort. But the Griffins' defense took over in the second and third games propelling CHC to a 2-1 lead with 25-18 and 25-22 wins.
The conference rivals never separated by more than four points in the fourth game, but the Griffins held a 24-21 lead with match-point on the line. The Lightning rallied and the opponents traded points until GBC managed a 30-28 win to force the deciding game.
Using the momentum from the comeback win in the fourth set, the Lightning blew past the deflated Griffins and won game five, 15-9.
GBC is back in action on Sat. as the Lightning visit the University of the District of Columbia.
