INDIANA, Pa. - The Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team (2-7) suffered its fifth and sixth straight losses on Sunday against Slippery Rock University and West Virginia State University at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Tournament. The Lightning were shut out 3-0 in both matches.
Against Slippery Rock, sophomore outside hitters Roni Shaner and Amanda Mills each led the team with four kills apiece, as Shaner also led the team with 11 digs. Freshman Monica Dempsey had 12 assists and nine digs on the day.
But it was not enough as the Lightning fell in straight sets, 25-9, 25-9 and 25-10.
Against West Virginia State Unversity, fifth-year senior Kellyn Nolan led the Lightning with five kills and two assists. Dempsey pitched in with 11 assists, three digs, and four kills. Shaner recorded four kills and nine digs. Fifth-year senior Christine Hudock led the team with 12 digs.
Still, the Lightning struggled, losing in straight sets by scores of 25-5, 25-13 and 25-7.
The shutout losses today mark the fourth and fifth straight shutout loss for GBC. The Lightning have lost 18 straight sets, dating back to the 3-2 loss to Dominican on Sept. 5 when they once led the match 2-0.
GBC is back in action on Tues. night, 7 p.m. when the Lightning host Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference rival Holy Family.
