Goldey-Beacom Volleyball Splits Home Matches to Open Season

Lightning Fall 3-1 to Philadelphia, Beat Bowie State 3-0

Shaner averaged 3.14 kills and 4.71 digs per-set in the two matches

WILMINGTON, Del. - The Goldey-Beacom volleyball team split two home matches on Saturday afternoon at the Joseph West Jones Center, losing the first to Philadelphia University, 3-1, and then coming back to beat Bowie State University, 3-0.

Leading the Lightning on its 1-1 afternoon were freshman setter Monica Dempsey and sophomore outside hitter Roni Shaner.  Dempsey recorded 28 assists and 20 digs against Philadelphia and Shaner averaged 3.14 kills and 4.71 digs per-set in the two matches.

In the first match against Philadelphia, the Rams (2-0) won with scores of 25-11, 25-18, 18-25 and 25-9. Philadelphia's Celena Rendon led the way with 16 kills, 14 digs and one assist.

Goldey-Beacom (1-1) bounced back however, and defeated Bowie State (0-2) by scores of 25-9, 25-19 and 25-17.

Shaner led the way with 11 kills and 12 digs and Dempsey led the team with 26 assists.

The Lightning is back in action on Tues. night as they go on the road to take on Lincoln University (Pa.) at 6 p.m.
