Wilmington, DE – Lightning win double overtime thriller to earn 2nd seed in CACC South
The Lightning men's basketball team took on Chestnut Hill College last night in their last regular season game, with playoff positions unclear for both teams.
The Lightning grabbed the early lead, but watched Chestnut Hill storm back. Battling through a few lead changes in the first half, the Lightning found themselves down by two (32-30) as they entered the locker room at intermission.
Chestnut Hill would maintain the lead for much of the second half, until junior Kyle White (28 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists) tied the game up at 59-59, with just under a minute to play. Neither team could score in the final minute, despite a last second jumper from junior Adrian Miles (14 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block).
At the end of the first overtime, the teams were tied again (64-64), and the Lightning had the ball with 12 seconds remaining. Sophomore Azeez Ellegood's (6 points, 4 assists, 4 steals) jumper at the buzzer was just off mark, and the teams moved to the 2nd overtime period.
The Lightning took a quick lead to start the second overtime, but the Griffins tied the game up and then took a one-point lead. Kyle White's two free throws gave the Lightning the lead back to the Lightning with just 1:06 left on the clock. Two defensive stops, a pair of Ellegood free throws, and one from Miles, sealed the 74-73 win for the Lightning.
Sophomore Sam McDuffie added 9 points and 5 rebounds, while junior Troy Esquilin had 8 points and 8 rebounds.
With the win, the Lightning (8-8, 13-14) earned the second seed in the CACC South and the right to host their quarterfinal game against Holy Family University next Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at 7:00pm.
