PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team, led by freshman Monica Dempsey's nine kills and 15 assists and sophomore Roni Shaner's seven kills and 13 assists, surged past Lincoln University, 3-0 in non-league Division II action Wed. night at the Jones Center. The Lightning improved to 2-0 against the Lions this season, having already defeated them on the road back on Sept. 1
The Lightning, which improved to 6-13 this season, won the match 25-15, 25-14 and 25-9. Senior Chalea Johnson also pitched in with seven kills, and A.J. Hicks, who made the switch to libero for this game, led the team with nine digs.
The Lions (7-16) were led offensively by Nekia Morris (11 kills) and Lia Hubbard (18 assists). Morris also led the team with eight digs.
In the first set, GBC pulled ahead to early leads of 4-0 and then 14-7, and the Lightning never looked back. Junior Charlotte Minshall (five kills, two assists) scored the game-winner on a kill off a Dempsey assist as GBC took the first set, 25-15. Johnson and Dempsey led the Lightning with three kills apiece to help the Lightning grab a 1-0 match lead.
The two teams traded points early on in the second set, but with GBC ahead 12-11, the Lightning went on a 9-0 run on the service of Christine Hudock. The graduate senior libero had two service aces and GBC benefited from four Lincoln attack errors as the Lightning took a 21-11 lead.
Freshman Catherine Howard (two kills, two blocks, two digs) scored the game-winner on a solo block as GBC won the second set 25-14.
Up 2-0, the Lightning led the entire third game, pulling away steadily throughout the match. Five different Lightning players had service aces: Hudock, Shaner, Johnson, Dempsey and Hicks. Shaner (four kills, five assists) and Dempsey (three kills, five assists) led the way as GBC cruised to a 25-9 match-clinching win.
The Lightning are back in action tomorrow, Thurs. Oct. 8 on the road at Bowie State University at 6 p.m. GBC defeated Bowie State 3-0 on Aug. 29 at home this season.
