LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The upset-minded Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team came into the GCU Wellness Center looking to put a stop to Georgian Court's 66-game Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win streak, but the Lions were up to the task, stomping the Lightning 3-0 on Thurs. night.
GBC (8-20, 3-15 CACC) fell 25-12, 25-23, 25-15 as GCU won its 67th straight match and improved to 21-8 (16-0 CACC).
Sophomore Roni Shaner led the way offensively for the Lightning with five kills and four assists. Freshman Monica Dempsey pitched in with three kills and five assists, and senior Chalea Johnson added four kills.
Leading the way for the Lions was Stephanie Rivera with 14 kills on a .478 hitting percentage. Directing traffic was Lisamary Figueroa with 40 assists, and Ana Cruz led GCU with a game-high 20 digs.
GBC hit a mere .080 percent in the first game and -.074 percent in the third as the Lightning lost those two games 25-12 and 25-15, respectively. The Lions, meanwhile, hit .538 percent and .312 percent in those two games.
But the Lightning made things interesting in the second game, hitting .136 percent to .119 by GCU. GBC took advantage of 10 Lion errors to hang around until the very end of that match before GCU came away with a 25-23 win.
The Lightning are back home at the Joseph West Jones Center on Sat. at 1 p.m. to host CACC foe Felician College.
