Former University of Delaware Blue Hen Brian Johnson has joined the men’s basketball coaching staff as an assistant at Goldey-Beacom College, it was announced in July 2011.
“We are very excited to bring Brian Johnson to Goldey-Beacom,” Hammond said. “Under the guidance of Coach [Monté] Ross, Brian has learned, over the past five years, the dedication and hard work it takes to be successful at the highest level. He will be a great addition to our staff, working with our guys on and off the floor.”
During his career at UD which spanned from 2006-2011, Johnson played in 122 games and scored 1,017 points. He owns the longest streak of consecutive starts in school history, starting all 94 games during his first three years.
A point guard out of Annapolis, Md., Johnson ranks second all-time at UD in minutes played (3,978) and third in assists with 510. He also finished his career ranked 10th with 132 career three-pointers made.
“This is a great opportunity for Brian,” said University of Delaware men’s basketball head coach Monté Ross. “He was always a coach on the floor for us, so it’s natural for him to move into the coaching profession. Brian will do well in his coaching career since he has a great understanding of the game, as well as a history of working with people and helping them succeed.”
Johnson said he welcomes the chance to stay involved in the sport of basketball, and he plans on making the most of his stay at Goldey-Beacom.
“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to coach athletes and to learn from Coach Hammond,” Johnson said. “So far he’s been a great teacher, and I’ve soaked up so much knowledge already in a short time. He’s somebody the University of Delaware coaching staff respects a lot, and I really look forward to working with him.”
