Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tre Powell’s Floater With 2.4 Seconds Remaining Lifts Men’s Basketball to 89-85 Win at Post

Freshman Tre Powell (Mount Laurel, NJ) hit the go-ahead basket with 2.4 seconds left and Goldey-Beacom benefitted from good news elsewhere in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference following its 89-85 triumph at Post in Waterbury, CT.

A competitive second half swung the Lightning's way with 2:30 remaining, when sophomore Zakari McQueen (Petersburg, VA) drained his career-best eighth 3-pointer to give his side a 79-77 lead.

Goldey-Beacom had the ball with under two minutes left and looked to make things a two-possession game.  Junior Shane Taylor (Ellicott City, MD) drove to the goal and missed a layup, but senior David Robinson (Philadelphia, PA) was right there for the rebound and layup with 78 seconds to go for an 81-77 contest.

The Eagles got a layup with 56 seconds remaining from Tre Duncan for an 81-79 game, but gave it right back with a backcourt foul.  Taylor made both free throws with 55 seconds to play in restoring the four-point margin.

Post then looked to Derrick Thomas II for some offense and he delivered, converting an old-fashioned three-point play with 47 seconds to go for an 83-82 game.

The Eagles again committed a backcourt foul and again Taylor obliged, hitting twice more from the stripe with 44 seconds remaining to make it 85-82.

Post went for the quick basket and got more than that with Thomas hitting a layup as part of another old-fashioned three-point play and an 85-85 tie with 32 seconds to go.

The Lightning now had their chance to bleed the clock and go for the lead late.  Powell had the ball on the left baseline and floated one that hit the rim, then the backboard and dropped in for an 87-85 GBC lead.

The Eagles now had to go full court, smaller than the customary 94 feet.  Thomas launched a pass that was intercepted by Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ), who hit twice from the foul line with 1.3 seconds to go.

The other good news was that Chestnut Hill fell to Dominican and Jefferson dropped one to Caldwell.  Goldey-Beacom (10-13, 7-5 CACC) now moves into a tie with Chestnut Hill (7-5) for first place in the CACC South Division and Jefferson (6-6) falls to third.

The top four teams in each of the two divisions go to the CACC Tournament and the top two host a quarterfinal game.

McQueen scored 29 points to close one short of his career high, Robinson had 14 and seven rebounds, Powell scored 14 points with Marsh getting 12 and 10 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double.

Taquan Williams scored 15 points, Bol Akot netted 14, Harrison Warnock scored 13 with, Thomas, Deng Deang and Tre Duncan adding 12 apiece for Post (13-11, 7-5).

Goldey-Beacom is home Tuesday for its first-place showdown against Chestnut Hill, starting at 8:00 pm.  Please consult GBCathletics.com and our X account (@gbclightning) for any schedule changes due to the weather.
