Men's and Women's Cross Country returned to the course in their 2024 season openers at the Philadelphia Cross Classic in Philadelphia, PA, with the men finishing third and the women finishing fifth.
In the men's eight-kilometer race, sophomore John Ferry (Rising Sun, Md.) finished in first place with a strong time of 28:16.0.
Freshman Kalle Ohlund (Huskvarna, Sweden) had a strong showing in his first race with the Lightning and finished in seventh place with a time of 29:56.9. Freshman Cesar Martinez (Eagle Pass, Texas) placed 16th place with a time of 31:30.4 and senior Yusef Shakur placed 25th with a time of 32:31.0.
Freshman Aquillino Rozanski (Olympia, Washington) and Jalen Wright (Wilmington, DE) crossed the finish line in 57th and 59th with times of 37:37.8 and 37:50.7, respectively.
In the women's five-kilometer race, Senior Izzy Popoff (Cicero, N.Y.) and junior Haley Schofield (Wilmington, DE) led the team in 26th and 27th with times of 24:18.0 and 24:20.1.
Senior Ny'jashia Smith (Wilmington, DE) placed 31st with a time of 24:47.5, freshman Liv Drewling (Düsseldorf, Germany) finished 32nd with a time of 24:48.0 and freshman Madelyn Cool (Smyrna, DE) ran a time of 24:53.4 to place 34th. Junior Kaylah Hill (Brooklyn, N.Y.) wrapped up the team finish placing 52nd with a time of 28:45.4.
Goldey-Beacom heads to Galloway, NJ next Saturday to compete in the Osprey Open, with the women beginning at 10:30 am and the men at 11:15 am.
