Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Handed 93-79 Loss by Dominican (NY) in the CACC Tournament Quarterfinals

Goldey-Beacom nearly rallied from a 17-point second-half deficit before a raucous and energetic crowd, but Dominican (NY) was too much down the stretch in handing the former a 93-79 loss in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament quarterfinals in Wilmington, DE.

Dominican in the opening half had to do something to overcome 13 turnovers during that span and did, shooting 58 percent (18-of-31) from the floor with eight 3-pointers in taking a 45-31 lead.  Jaden Honis scored 12 points in that time with Isaiah Honis adding eight and six rebounds.

The score was not indicative of the Lightning's play as they more than held their own in shooting 46 percent (12-of-26) from the field and forcing all those turnovers.  Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ), picked first team All-CACC, and fellow sophomore Omari Banks (Middletown, DE) scored seven points apiece.

Things did not look good when the Chargers (19-10) built the margin to 50-33 with 18:12 left, consistently working for the open shot and holding the Lightning to just one attempt on the other end.

But GBC had answers in the form of a 20-6 run in just under five minutes, using constant pressure and wisely working the floor in closing to 56-53 with 13:21 remaining.  Banks, playing arguably his finest game of the season, scored six points in that time and second team All-CACC senior Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) ended it with a 3-pointer.

The partisan crowd now had Dominican's full attention and the battle-tested visitors fought back, putting together a 16-7 spurt over 5 1/2 minutes that made it a 76-64 game with 5:37 left.  Seth Sharif-Brown and Jaden Honis poured in six points apiece to help the Chargers shoot 5-of-7 from the field in that time.

Dominican saw the lead shrink to no fewer than seven points the rest of the way in punching its ticket to the semifinals on Saturday to face Bloomfield in Caldwell, NJ.  A big reason for that was the team shooting 54 percent (14-of-26) from the field in the second half with just six turnovers.

Marsh saw his hopes of making the all-region team increase with 22 points and seven rebounds over 36 minutes.  He moved into 13th place on the school's career points list, now with 981.

Banks simply was awesome, netting 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting with nine rebounds.  Junior Ayshion Centeno (Pleasantville, NJ) scored 10 points, Derry poured in nine with senior Mekhi Collins (Medford, MA) adding eight for the Lightning (15-14).

This ends an outstanding campaign in which Goldey-Beacom reached the CACC Tournament for the sixth time in its last seven competitive seasons.  The squad ended second in the CACC South Division and notched a pair of four-game winning streaks.
