Women’s Tennis Dealt 4-1 Loss by Chestnut Hill in the CACC Semifinals

(boxscore)

Goldey-Beacom's magical fall that produced two all-league players, a Coach of the Year and plenty of optimism ended with a 4-1 loss to Chestnut Hill in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference semifinals at Delcastle Tennis Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning marched into their first CACC Tournament in five years as the number two seed against a Griffins squad they split the two regular-season matches against.  There was plenty to build on after the news earlier this week that junior Zehra Canbaz (Denizli, Turkiye) and freshman Sofia Lopez (Bogota, Colombia) each were named first team all-league with Bernard Flowers tabbed CACC Coach of the Year.

That turned into a rough going in the doubles with GBC dropping the point.  Senior Lucia Corte (Gijon, Spain) and junior Jess Sanzo (Bristol, England) fell, 6-0, to Romi Meirovich and Claudia Rasilla at third doubles before senior Elizabeth Mova (Sevastopol, Ukraine) and junior Nahomi Quinonez (Manta, Ecuador) dropped a 6-3 contest to Elena Arenas Guisasol and Annabel Snow at No. 2 doubles.

But GBC (8-4) got things level, 1-1, thanks to the Lopez' amazing play.  She moved to 12-0 on the fall and gave her squad a big lift with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at fifth singles over Snow.  It was Lopez' 11th victory of the season in straight sets.

Chestnut Hill (12-4) grabbed a 2-1 lead when Corte dropped a 6-2, 6-0 match at sixth singles to Rasilla and the hole got deeper with Canbaz falling, 6-1, 6-2 to Lilian Bandel at No. 2 singles.

Quinonez saw her match at third singles go to a third set and Mova was in a second-set tiebreak at No. 1 singles.  But things ended when Meirovich amassed a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win at fourth singles over Sanzo.

Other highlights from the fall include Lopez ending with 20 wins, Canbaz combining for 16 that include eight each in singles and doubles, Quinonez recording 16 and Corte tabulating 14.  GBC ended the fall with a 47-23 singles record and 24-11 in doubles.
