Men’s Basketball Dealt Season-Ending 82-74 Loss at Wilmington

Goldey-Beacom went toe-to-toe against Wilmington with the final Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament spot from the South Division at stake, but was handed an 82-74 loss in Newark, DE to see its season conclude.

The teams for most of the second half played as close as you could get with neither owning more than a four-point advantage.  Goldey-Beacom finally got its first lead of the half at 63-61 with 6:02 left, thanks to an 8-2 run in which junior Damani Thomas (Kingston, NY) scored six points.

Unfortunately, the Wildcats had an 8-2 run of their own and that gave them a 69-65 cushion with 3:30 remaining.  Marcus Pierce hit two free throws for the two-point lead with 4:28 left and Randy Rickards closed the run with a jumper.

After sophomore Trey Lewis (Herndon, VA) made a layup with 2:59 left to get GBC within 69-67, Taalib Holloman's free throw with 2:36 remaining made it a three-point contest.  The aforementioned four-point wall saw the dam break when Rickards canned a huge jumper to give Wilmington a 72-67 margin with 1:44 left.

Hope still remained for the Lightning when sophomore Tyshon Judge (Merchantville, NJ) got a steal and a dunk with 59 seconds to go for a 72-69 margin.  But Pierce hit twice from the line three seconds later and Amiri Stewart followed suit with 36 seconds to go for a 76-69 game.

Strong shooting from the field and the foul line turned out to be the decider for Wilmington, which shot 58 percent (14-of-24) from the floor in the second half and 13-for-14 from the line during that span.  This included the home side making its last nine free throw attempts.

Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ) closed his remarkable and likely decorated freshman campaign with 16 points and 10 rebounds for his 14th double-double of the season that includes 10 of his last 14 games.  The five-time CACC Rookie of the Week ends the year with 524 points for the seven-best mark in program history, 282 rebounds for the second-best mark and 190 field goals to close fourth.

Thomas netted 16 points, Judge scored 14 with Lewis adding 13 for the Lightning (10-18, 7-10 CACC), who shot 43 percent (29-of-68) and nailed eight 3-pointers.

Holloman poured in 27 points on 9-of-14 shooting, Stewart netted 13, Pierce scored 12 with Rickards and Justin Thomas adding 10 apiece for Wilmington (16-12, 8-9).
