Goldey-Beacom's season resulted in another trip to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament, but it came to an end with a 95-61 loss at Dominican (NY) in the tournament quarterfinals in Orangeburg, NY.
An expectedly spirited first half between two schools meeting in the CACC Tournament for the second time in five seasons played almost level roughly the first 10 minutes. That was before the Chargers ended the half on a 27-14 run during the last 9:03 for a 43-31 lead. Jalen Burgess, today named second team All-CACC, scored 17 points in that time with Justin Copman adding seven.
Burgess closed the half with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting to help Dominican shoot 57 percent (16-of-28) from the field. Sophomore Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) added 11 points for Goldey-Beacom, which shot just 37 percent (11-of-30).
The Chargers came out of the gates blistering the second half, going on a 16-2 run over 4 1/2 minutes for a 64-36 lead with 14 minutes left. Daniel Grant netted seven points in that time with Copman adding six.
Burgess was in control for the home side, scoring 34 points on 13-of-22 shooting with Copman adding 17. All of this went a long way toward Dominican shooting 54 percent (36-of-67) from the field with an incredible 13 three-pointers.
Derry did his best in continuing what was a standout season for the first team All-CACC pick. He canned a 3-pointer to become the first in program history to hit 100 in a season and his 16 points moves him to 15th place in team history with 878.
Sophomore Mekhi Collins (Medford, MA) added 11 points with senior Tyler Jones (Lawrenceville, NJ) pouring in nine. Junior Juran Ligonde (Boston, MA) netted seven points after being picked third team all-league.
This marks the end of a tremendous run for Jones, who transferred to Pike Creek prior to the 2019-20 campaign and gave the Lightning two standout campaigns. Showing great court awareness and being one of the College's best leaders, he has made himself one of the campus' most liked student-athletes and will be missed. His two assists tonight moves him into ninth in program history with 202 career.
Goldey-Beacom (14-14, 10-8 CACC) was competing in the CACC Tournament for a fifth straight year, one shy of the school record set from 2007-12.
