Women’s Basketball Edged in 61-59 Loss at Bloomfield

Goldey-Beacom fought to the very end, unable to hold off Bloomfield College in a 61-59 defeat on Saturday in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest in Bloomfield, NJ.

The Lightning trailed 13-12 at the end of the first quarter after a made layup by sophomore Briana Seltzer (Reading, PA) with 3 tenths of a second left.

Each team struggled on the offensive end in the second quarter, but the Bears were able to capitalize on the defensive end by holding Goldey-Beacom to just 14 percent from the field, forcing them into five turnovers and snatching a pair of steals to lead 24-19 at the half.

Seltzer scored a team-high 11 points. Junior Jhordan Gardner (Swedesboro, N.J.) recorded a career-high 10 points going 50 percent (3-of-6) from the field. Alanna Speaks (Dover, Del.) added eight points and fellow junior Alexis Harrison (Millville, N.J.) snatched a team-high 11 rebounds for the Lightning (7-15, 2-12 CACC).

In the third quarter, the Lightning cut into the lead in trailing 32-31 after a layup made by freshman Azuri Abraham (Phillipsburg, N.J.) at the 4:06 mark of the quarter. The Bears went on an 11-5 run to close the quarter.

In the final frame, Goldey-Beacom tied the game at 49 apiece with 4:59 remaining with a set of free throws made by Abraham. A made jumper by Seltzer with 2:37 left regained the lead (55-53) before Jaylah Bennett netted a jumper in to tie the game a final time at 55. Down one possession, the Lighting were unable to force overtime with a turnover and steal made by Tanazha Ford in the final 61-59 win.

Daniya Darby recorded a double-double with a game-high 18 points on 55 percent (6-of-11) from the field and a game-high 13 rebounds, adding four steals and a pair of blocks. Siani Smith added 10 points on 71 percent (5-of-7) from the field and Jaylah Bennett scored 10 points for the Bears who shot 38 percent (21-of-55) from the field (4-18, 2-12).
