Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Notches 86-76 Triumph Over Caldwell

Goldey-Beacom built a sizable lead and then withstood a stubborn Caldwell side in recording an 86-76 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning in the opening half played exceptional defense, forcing 12 turnovers and limiting the Cougars to just 29 percent shooting (9-of-31) for a 38-28 lead.  The offense also was not too shabby with sophomore Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) scoring 15 points and junior Juran Ligonde (Boston, MA) adding 10.

Caldwell was hanging around and got it to 70-65 with 4:13 left when Derrick Bueno converted an old-fashioned three-point play.  A momentum change seemed imminent, but the Lightning put a quick halt to that when sophomore Mattia Morini (Bologna, Italy) drilled a critical 3-pointer with 3:06 left for a 73-65 contest.

The next possession then proved to be the most vital with senior Tyler Jones (Lawrenceville, NJ) getting a massive steal that led to a fastbreak layup from sophomore Mekhi Collins (Medford, MA) with 2:46 remaining, making it a 10-point game.

Derry ended with 31 points on 10-of-19 shooting and was 6-of-10 from 3-point range, marking the fourth time this season he has gone off for at least 30 points.  This all helped the Lightning record their fifth victory over the Cougars in the last six meetings.

Ligonde also was a major factor, closing with 23 points on 7-of-13 shooting to go with nine rebounds that included six on the offensive side.  It marks the second straight game he has scored 23 points and he is averaging 20.2 points over the last five contests.

Morini notched 14 points and seven rebounds with Collins adding 11 points for the Lightning (7-7, 4-2 CACC), who shot 47 percent (14-of-30) from the field in the second half and 7-of-13 from three-point range.

Anthony Cooper netted 26 points on 9-of-16 shooting, Tyler Washington scored 14, Mark Heber added 13 with Gerald Blount getting 12 rebounds for the Cougars (6-7, 2-4).

Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday visits Wilmington for a big CACC South Division matchup.  Game time is 8:00 pm, which follows the women's 6:00 pm contest.
