Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Season Ends with 90-86 CACC Semifinal Loss to Bloomfield

Goldey-Beacom had all of the game's momentum with just under five minutes left, but Bloomfield turned up the defense in a second half that saw very little and handed the former a crushing 90-86 loss in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference semifinals in Caldwell, NJ.

Goldey-Beacom (15-15), looking for a fourth trip to the conference final, ended the first half on a 19-8 spurt after being down 10 and went into the locker room with a 35-34 halftime cushion.  Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) netted six points in that time and fellow senior Mahir Johnson (Chester, PA) added five.

Johnson ended the half with eight points on 3-of-5 shooting, Tevin Service (Union, NJ) netted seven points and fellow sophomore Marcellus Livingston (Linden, NJ) also had seven.

The second half was all about offense and the game was screaming for a big run.  That took place when the Lightning grabbed momentum with an 11-0 spurt in just under three minutes for a 79-71 lead with 4:52 remaining.  Livingston netted five points in that span and sophomore Kyle Elliot (Rahway, NJ) added four.

Bloomfield (21-9) began to chip away in the form of Dontay Julius, who canned two free throws and then hit a layup with 4:10 to go for a 79-75 deficit.  Taite then hit a free throw for GBC with 3:18 left for a five-point game, but missed the second to end his incredible free-throw streak at 50 consecutive makes.

Bloomfield's Keith Washington made a big driving layup with 3:06 remaining for an 80-77 contest and, following a GBC turnover, Kavione Green was fouled while shooting a 3-pointer.  He canned all three attempts with 1:40 to play for an 80-80 tie.

Green again came through on a layup with 70 seconds to go for an 82-80 game before Johnson nailed two free throws with 55 seconds remaining.  Washington was called upon to provide heroics again for the Bears and delivered, making a layup with 36 seconds left for an 84-82 contest.

Then came a critical possession in which Johnson missed a jumper for the Lightning and a tie-up ensued between Livingston and Rich Chapman.  Bloomfield had the possession arrow that resulted in a massive Goldey-Beacom empty possession.

Washington made two free throws with 12 seconds to go for an 86-82 game before Elliot's layup with 6.9 seconds remaining for a two-point game.  Chapman then hit two from the stripe with six seconds to go for an 88-84 contest that all but ended things.

Johnson and Livingston scored 18 points apiece, Elliot netted 17 with Taite amassing 15 and 11 rebounds for the Lightning, who shot 70 percent (19-of-27) from the floor in the second half and 53 percent (32-of-61) overall.

Julius netted 24 points, Washington poured in 20, Green scored 18 and Chapman added 16 and eight rebounds for the Bears, who shot 67 percent (20-of-30) from the field in the second half and 52 percent (34-of-66) overall.

The loss ends the highly decorated career for Taite, who this season was picked first team all-league a second straight year after being tabbed CACC Player of the Year a season ago.  He ends his career first in team history with 1,810 points, 377 assists, 479 free throws, 211 three-pointers, 560 field goals, second with 218 steals and fifth with 531 rebounds.

Taite also was named to the CACC All-Tournament Team a second straight year, thanks largely to his 40 points Tuesday in Goldey-Beacom's 86-78 quarterfinal triumph over Caldwell.

Goldey-Beacom was in the conference semifinals for the second straight year and on Tuesday hosted a quarterfinal for the second straight year.  It is the seventh time in school history the Lightning played in the conference semifinals.
