Women’s Basketball Dealt 67-63 Loss at Holy Family

Goldey-Beacom saw its trip to Northeast Philadelphia not go as planned with the third quarter being its undoing in a 67-63 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss at Holy Family.

Goldey-Beacom went into the locker room on a burst, turning a 23-18 deficit with 8:19 left in the first half into a 12-3 run for a 30-26 lead.  Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ) and fellow junior Alexis Stubblefield (Woodbridge, VA) each scored five points in the run and both ended the half with seven points.

The Lightning shot 50 percent (6-of-12) from the field in the second quarter and held the Tigers to 33 percent (4-of-12).

But the momentum was gone in the third quarter, when the Tigers outscored the Lightning 23-11 by shooting 46 percent (6-of-13) from the floor for a 49-41 lead.  Molly Masciantonio netted 10 points in the stanza and Anjelai Hayes added seven.

GBC trailed 61-50 with 2:40 left before scoring the next seven points to close to a four-point deficit with 59 seconds remaining.  McGrogan netted five points in that time.

After Holy Family's Casey Schweitzer canned two free throws with 48 seconds left for a 63-57 contest, McGrogan's layup three seconds later again made it a four-point margin.

Masciantonio's free throw with 39 seconds to play increased the Tigers' lead to 64-59 before McGrogan's layup cut it to 64-61 with 19 seconds left.  But Holy Family finally put away things with 13 seconds remaining on Katie O'Hare's two free throws.

McGrogan ended with 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting, freshman Sarah Round (Northampton, England) poured in 13 points with senior Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) adding 11 and eight rebounds for GBC (7-8, 3-3 CACC), which shot 40 percent (9-of-24) from the field.

Masciantonio netted 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting with seven rebounds, Hayes recorded 12 and seven with Schweitzer also scoring 12 points for the Tigers (4-9, 2-3), who shot 45 percent (22-of-49) from the floor.

Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday against Caldwell at 1:00 pm.  The men's game between the same schools follows at 3:00 pm.
