Men’s Basketball Cruises to 80-51 Triumph at Chestnut Hill

Senior Mahir Johnson (Chester, PA) scored a career-best 27 points and helped Goldey-Beacom return to its winning ways with an 80-51 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference rout at Chestnut Hill in Philadelphia, PA.

Goldey-Beacom came out firing and established early momentum, opening a 20-9 lead in just over the first nine minutes.  Senior Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) poured in seven points in that span.

The strong play continued for the remainder of the half with Goldey-Beacom holding a 42-21 halftime lead.  The Lightning canned six 3-pointers, forced the Griffins to commit 10 turnovers held them to just 31 percent (10-of-32) shooting.  Johnson poured in 16 points during that time and Taite added 11.

The contest was never in doubt from that point as the Lightning won their sixth straight from the Griffins and eighth in the last nine outings.  With Wilmington (6-4) losing in overtime at Jefferson, Goldey-Beacom (9-11, 7-4 CACC) vaults into second place in the CACC South Division.

Johnson shot 9-of-16 from the floor to go with eight rebounds and four 3-pointers.  Taite netted 20 points, senior Troy Stancil (Washington, DC) closed with 12 and sophomore Kyle Elliot (Rahway, NJ) added 10 for the Lightning, who shot 44 percent (25-of-57) from the floor.

Keyon Butler had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Griffins (3-16, 0-10), who committed 20 turnovers and only shot 33 percent (20-of-61) from the floor.

Goldey-Beacom again is on the road Saturday, this time to face Nyack at 3:00 pm.  The women's game between the same schools precedes it at 1:00 pm.
