Women’s Basketball Gives Its All in 60-55 Loss at No. 9 USciences

Goldey-Beacom came out firing in the first half, but could not hold on to the momentum in a 60-55 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss at ninth-ranked University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, PA.

GBC woke up many in the opening quarter by scoring 12 straight points en route to a 17-11 lead after one.  Senior Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) and freshman Sarah Round (Northampton, England) netted six points apiece in the period for the Lightning, who shot 50 percent (6-of-12) from the floor with five 3-pointers and limited the Devils to just 36 percent (5-of-14) overall and 1-of-7 from beyond the arc.

The Lightning went into the locker room up 25-17, shooting 44 percent (10-of-23) from the floor and holding the Devils to only 22 percent (7-of-32) that included 1-of-17 from 3-point range.  Turner-Rush netted 10 points in the half and Round closed with eight.

USciences roared back in the third quarter, outscoring GBC 23-12 in the period for a 40-37 lead.  Seven different players for the Devils scored in the quarter with Jordan Vitelli netting six and Irisa Ye adding five.

Freshman Lexi Weikert (Harrisburg, PA) nailed a 3-pointer with 4:14 remaining to get the Lightning within 47-45, but the Devils scored the next six points to all but ice things for an eight-point margin.  Jordan Vitelli hit two free throws with 2:56 to play, Irisa Ye made a layup with 2:10 left and Taylor Hamm canned two from the line with 1:53 to go.

USciences won the game at the line by shooting 11-for-12 over the last three minutes and 19-for-22 for the contest.  This overcame it hitting just 34 percent (18-of-53) from the field and 5-of-28 from 3-point range.

Turner-Rush ended with 16 points and four 3-pointers, Round had 13 points and eight assists with freshman Alexis Harrison (Millville, NJ) adding 13 points for the Lightning (8-10, 4-5 CACC), who shot 40 percent (21-of-53) from the floor.

Ye poured in 20 points and Vitelli added 14 for USciences (17-1, 8-1), which has won six straight.

Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday to battle Felician.  Game time is 1:00 pm, preceding the men's 3:00 pm contest.
