Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Handed 74-69 Loss at USciences

Despite three players scoring in double figures, Goldey-Beacom was held off the scoreboard the final 2 1/2 minutes and left Philadelphia with a 74-69 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss at University of the Sciences.

GBC was up 67-66 with 2:30 left when senior Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) missed the front end of a one-and-one.  But USciences was called for what seemed at the time a critical lane violation, allowing Taite to hit the redo and the second for a 69-66 game.

The Devils on the next possession looked to drive but instead found a wide-open Paddy Casey, who canned a 3-pointer from the left wing for a 69-69 tie with 2:10 remaining.

USciences had the ball back with the score still deadlocked in the final minute and it looked like GBC got a huge boost when Casey missed a layup.  However, Brandon Hathaway hauled in a huge offensive rebound and was fouled.

Hathaway calmly drilled both free throws with 52 seconds to play for a 71-69 game.

The Lightning then committed a huge turnover and the Devils had a chance to increase their lead.  Sean Simon looked to end the game as he attempted a 3-pointer, but he missed and freshman Giovanni Jones (Norfolk, VA) got the rebound to give the visitors a chance.

Goldey-Beacom did not call timeout and explored all options.  Sophomore Kyle Elliot (Rahway, NJ) was the one who got the ball outside and drove, but his short jumper bounced off the rim and Hathaway got the rebound.

Tanner Kerr ended up with the ball, was fouled and hit twice from the line with 4.3 seconds remaining for a 73-69 game.

Senior Mahir Johnson (Chester, PA) poured in 21 points for the Lightning, one off his career best from last year's CACC quarterfinal against Felician on February 27.  Jones had 14 points and 12 rebounds for his first double-double with sophomore Marcellus Livingston (Linden, NJ) netting 14 points.

Simon was lethal off the bench, getting 17 points and four 3-pointers over just 28 minutes.  Casey netted 17 points with Kerr amassing 14 and 12 rebounds for the Devils (6-12, 3-6 CACC).

Goldey-Beacom (8-10, 6-3), which forced 21 turnovers, drops one game behind idle Jefferson (7-2) for first place in the CACC South Division.  It is the fifth consecutive game and seven time in the last eight contests the Lightning have induced their opponents into at least 18.

Goldey-Beacom fell into a 37-32 halftime hole, shooting 12-of-38 from the floor with only three 3-pointers.  Livingston netted eight points for the Lightning and Simon scored 11 for the Devils.

Goldey-Beacom finally returns home for a Saturday interdivision contest against Felician.  Game time is 3:00 pm, which follows the women's 1:00 pm contest.
