Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Speaks’ Free Throw Lifts Women’s Basketball to 48-47 Win at Felician

Freshman Alanna Speaks (Wilmington, DE) hauled in a crucial offensive rebound and converted a free throw with 7.4 seconds left, giving Goldey-Beacom a 48-47 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win at Felician in Rutherford, NJ.

Felician began to take control by scoring 10 straight points is just over four minutes for a 38-28 lead with 1:29 remaining in the third quarter.  Sophia Guerrier netted five points in that span and capped it with a layup.

But the Lightning fought back.  Trailing 40-32 entering the fourth quarter, the visitors scored the first nine points of the period in just five minutes for a one-point cushion.  Speaks was just getting started with five points in that time, including the go-ahead 3-pointer for Goldey-Beacom's first lead since 8-6.

Danielle Gibson drilled a 3-pointer with 2:13 left to give Felician a 45-44 lead.  After a series of empty possessions, Goldey-Beacom got the ball back once again looking for the lead.

Senior Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) was called upon in the last minute and she delivered.  After missing a shot, Bryson got her own rebound and made a layup with 34 seconds to play for a 46-45 contest.

Felician then had its chance for the lead and came through.  Gibson was handed the ball near the top of the key and with her foot on the line, hit a long two-point shot with 14 seconds remaining for a 47-46 Golden Falcons lead.

GBC then had many options to turn to with the ball and no shot clock.  It decided on junior Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA), who drove to the goal and was fouled with 8.6 seconds to go.  After making the first free throw for a tie game, she missed the second and Speaks ripped down the rebound before she was hacked.

After missing the first free throw, Speaks converted the second for a 48-47 lead.  GBC had a foul to give and used it with 3.8 seconds left to set up the final possession.  Gibson this time decided to drive toward the tin, but Bryson got a hand on her shot and the ball harmlessly floated away as time expired.

Speaks closed with 15 points, two shy of her personal best, and was 7-for-9 from the line over 34 minutes in her first career start.  Bryson had 10 points and 14 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season and 38th career with Turner-Rush and sophomore Ruth Fernandez (Madrid, Spain) adding seven points apiece for the Lightning (5-12, 3-4 CACC).

Bryson now stands second in school history with 534 field goals and third with 938 rebounds.

Gibson ended with 10 points for the Golden Falcons (4-9, 2-4), who shot just 33 percent (19-of-58) from the field and committed 22 turnovers.

Bryson had eight points and six rebounds in the opening half for the Lightning, who allowed the Golden Falcons to shoot just 33 percent (9-of-27) from the floor but still trailed 24-19.

Goldey-Beacom is back home Saturday against Bloomfield as part of a doubleheader with the men's squad.  The women's game starts at 1:00 pm, followed by the men's contest at 3:00 pm.
