Softball Upends Wilmington in its Opener at the CACC Tournament

Goldey-Beacom knew going against the defending Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference champions to open the league tournament was going to be a challenge, but the squad held its own with contributions on both offense and defense.

Junior Kylie Doyle (Tower City, PA) and senior Charlee King (New Castle, DE) each had RBI doubles and sophomore Shelby Murphy (Laurel, DE) made a tremendous catch to preserve the shutout in Goldey-Beacom's 2-0 victory over Wilmington (DE) in Lakewood, NJ.

The fifth-seeded Lightning (17-30) advance to the winner's bracket to face 15th-ranked and top-seeded Caldwell after 4:00 pm.

GBC got the only run it would need in the second inning.  Senior Paulynn Mao (Anaheim, CA) stroked a leadoff single and was sacrificed to second by freshman Dianna Gatto (Jefferson, NJ).  Following a groundout, Doyle came through with a two-out double to left that plated Mao for a 1-0 Lightning cushion.

The margin doubled to 2-0 in the fourth.  Sophomore Rachel Davis (Bethel, DE) led off with a single and junior pinch-runner Autumn Hollis (Elkton, MD) was advanced to second on Mao's sacrifice.  After a flyout, King lined a double to left that scored Hollis.

Doyle, as she has all season, pitched great in allowing just two hits the rest of the way that included the fateful seventh inning.  With Mirabella Klebart on first and Emily Luna representing the tying run, the latter ripped a shot to center that Murphy snagged on a great running catch just before the fence for the second out.

Becca Stanley then flied out to right for the Lightning's first CACC Tournament victory in 12 years.

Doyle (7-14) struck out three over seven innings, permitting just five hits for her first shutout of the season and second career.  She and Davis each ended with two hits.

Caitlyn Whiteside (17-8) gave up two runs and six hits over five innings for the Wildcats (34-18) with four strikeouts with Jazmeen Llamas and Colby Wyatt recording two hits apiece.
