Softball Ends Season With Tough Losses at Lock Haven

An RBI single from junior Charlee King (New Castle, DE) and great pitching from sophomore Natalie Mickles (Dingmans Ferry, PA) in game two were not enough for Goldey-Beacom in a tough 2-1 loss at regionally ranked Lock Haven, which followed an 8-0 setback in Lock Haven, PA.

The Lightning in game two got their run in the top of the first inning.  Shelby Murphy (Laurel, DE) drew a leadoff walk, reached second on a single from fellow freshman Rachel Davis (Bethel, DE) and scored on King's single up the middle.

Mickles was cruising along, not allowing a hit over the first two frames and retiring the side in order in three of the first six innings.

But the Bald Eagles scored twice in the last of the seventh for the win.  Rachel Mouillesseaux lined a one-out single, pinch-runner MaKaylah Holbert stole second and scored on Jodi Weaknecht's triple.  After Bekah Slattery walked and stole second, Weaknecht scored on Becca Caputo's infield single.

Davis, who joined King and Murphy as the only players for GBC (9-39) to start all 48 games, had two hits and Mickles (4-15) allowed two runs and five hits over 6 1/3 innings with a strikeout.

Mouillesseaux (14-10) struck out four over seven innings, yielding one run and three hits.

Lock Haven (32-15) broke open game one with four runs in the last of the third inning for a 5-0 lead.  Michelle Holweger, who had a first-inning sacrifice fly, recorded another in this frame for a 2-0 margin and Mouillesseaux cracked a three-run homer.

Mouillesseaux added an RBI single in the fifth for the last of her two hits and McKenna Garlock also had two hits.  Slattery (19-5) struck out five over six scoreless frames, allowing two hits and no walks.

Sophomore Lauren Conway (Hammonton, NJ) and freshman Alyssa Giampolo (East Windsor, NJ) each had a double and Millville, NJ freshman Alexa Calareso (0-6) gave up eight runs – six earned – and nine hits over 5 2/3 frames for the Lightning.

Lock Haven, ranked eighth, is the fifth regionally ranked team from the NCAA Atlantic Region that Goldey-Beacom has faced this season.
