Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Milestones Galore for Women’s Basketball in Victory at Georgian Court

Goldey-Beacom received a major scare from Georgian Court, but took the lead in the fourth quarter and pulled away for a 67-61 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory in Lakewood, NJ to end the season.

Georgian Court opened a 32-24 halftime lead by shooting 47 percent (14-of-30) from the floor and holding Goldey-Beacom to just 27 percent (9-of-34).  Alliyah Berger scored 13 points in the half for the Lions, who forced the Lightning into nine turnovers, and sophomore Marisa Howard (Reminderville, OH) poured in nine for the visitors.

GBC, which trailed by as many as 13 points in the second quarter, used a 16-6 run in the third to close to 47-46 in the final minute.  Howard, who enjoyed one of the finest games in her young career, poured in nine points in the spurt and sophomore Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) added six.

The game's first tie since 0-0 came with drama as sophomore Mikila Stefanski (Hammonton, NJ) buried a 3-pointer with 7:28 left for a 51-51 deadlock.  It was her 65th triple of the year, tying Bruno from last season for the school's single-season mark.

The Lightning held a 59-56 lead with the ball and just over two minutes left.  Bruno looked to increase the margin, but had her short jumper bounce off the rim.  However, freshman Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) grabbed the rebound and fed a quick pass to Bruno for a key layup and a five-point margin with 2:09 to play.

Berger nailed a jumper with 1:08 remaining for a 61-58 contest and now it was time for the Lightning once again to respond.  This time it was junior Jazz Lewis (Mount Holly, NJ), who hit a driving layup from the left baseline with 43 seconds left for a 63-58 game.

Jaelyn Tweedy canned a huge 3-pointer for the Lions to make it 63-61 with 37 seconds left, but Bruno was not to be denied.  She drove into the lane and banked one home with 19 seconds to play for a four-point game to give the Lightning their 21st straight victory over the Lions.

That basket also made Bruno the fourth player in program history to score at least 500 points in one season.  She ended the campaign at 502.

Bruno tonight finished with 28 points, including 21 in the second half, to match her season high and fall two short of her career best.  She now has 969 points that are eighth best in school history.  Her 128 career 3-pointers are third, her 290 assists are third and her 120 steals are tied for seventh.

Stefanski now has 90 career 3-pointers that are eighth in team history.

Howard tonight scored a career-best 20 points for the Lightning (9-19, 9-10 CACC), who shot 50 percent (14-of-28) from the floor in the second half and 37 percent (23-of-62) overall.

Berger had 23 points and 14 rebounds, Destiny Thompson netted 11 points and Jess Placher added 10 for the Lions (6-21, 4-15), who shot 43 percent (27-of-63) from the field but only were 3-of-19 from 3-point range.
