Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Erupts in Second Half for 78-66 Triumph Over Wilmington

Junior Shakeem Wilson (Brooklyn, NY) hit a critical 3-pointer with 1:39 remaining to give Goldey-Beacom some breathing room and a 78-66 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference triumph over Wilmington (DE) at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

Wilmington, trailing by as many as 15 points in the second half, crawled within 65-63 with 2:58 left when Sam Sanders converted 1-of-2 from the line.  But GBC immediately responded, getting a big jumper from freshman Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) with 2:35 remaining and a free throw from junior Elijah Tillman (Garnerville, NY) 22 seconds later for a 68-63 game.

Tyaire Ponzo-Meek kept the Wildcats in the hunt by hitting a layup with 1:56 to play for a 68-65 contest.  Now it was the Lightning's turn to come up clutch and it was Wilson who did the honors, taking a pass from Taite and burying his 3-pointer for a 71-65 margin.

Brian Adkins misfired on a 3-pointer for the Wildcats and Taite made two free throws with 64 seconds left for a 72-65 contest.

Taite poured in a career-best 26 points on 8-of-13 shooting, Wilson netted 15 and Tillman added 14 off the bench for the Lightning (9-18, 7-11 CACC), who shot 58 percent (15-of-26) from the floor in the second half and 49 percent (28-of-57) overall.

Ponzo-Meek netted 24 points, Adkins poured in 12 and Paul Medlin added 11 for Wilmington (9-18, 4-14), which shot 41 percent (23-of-56) from the field.

Unfortunately for GBC, the day's news took a decrescendo as Chestnut Hill (9-9) withheld a furious rally by University of the Sciences for a 73-72 overtime triumph to clinch the South Division's final conference-tournament spot.

Goldey-Beacom ends the season Tuesday at Georgian Court, beginning at 8:00 pm.
