Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bruno’s Career Night Leads Women’s Basketball to Seventh Straight Win

The exhilarating play of junior Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) continued as she poured in a career-best 38 points and outscored her teammates for Goldey-Beacom's seventh straight win, 74-70 over Shippensburg at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

Bruno simply was not going to be stopped and could not be denied on this night, easily besting her previous high of 30 points set February 28, 2015 at Caldwell and equaled 13 days ago at Holy Family.  Her 13 field goals also is a career best, breaking the mark of 12 accomplished in the two aforementioned contests.

If that was not enough, Bruno moved into sixth place on the Lightning's career scoring list and now stands at 1,241 points.  Her eight made free throws tonight gives her 197 career, moving her into ninth place in school history.  Bruno now has scored in double figures 37 consecutive games and hit a 3-pointer in 35 straight contests.

The school record of 39 points was set by Cherrise Graham on January 6, 2007 against Nyack.

As for the rest of the game, the Raiders led by as many as nine early in the second quarter and held a 62-55 cushion with 8:37 left.  That was before the Lightning used a 9-2 run over 4 1/2 minutes to forge a 64-64 tie with 4:08 to play.  Bruno netted four points in that span and sophomore Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) ended it with a clutch 3-pointer.

Haley Scullion gave Shippensburg a 66-64 lead with 3:39 left on a jumper and Stephanie Knauer went 1-for-2 from the line with 2:38 remaining.  But Bruno stayed with her theme of invincibility, canning a 3-pointer with 2:21 to play for a 67-67 tie.

Morgan Griffith missed a 3-pointer for the Raiders and freshman Jill Latanowich (Newton, MA) grabbed a huge rebound for the Lightning.  Freshman Destiny Harper (Mount Solon, VA) could not hit on a 3-point attempt, but Turner-Rush grabbed the rebound and knocked down the go-ahead jumper with 1:22 left to make it 69-67.

The score remained as such until there were 22 seconds left, when Bruno hit twice from the line for a 71-67 margin.  Lauren Gold nailed a 3-pointer for the Raiders with 15 seconds remaining for a one-point game before Bruno hit two more free throws four seconds later for a 73-70 contest.

Gold was called upon to do it again and forge a tie, but her three-point attempt was off and junior Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) grabbed the rebound.  Bryson then went 1-for-2 from the line with 2.9 seconds remaining and extend the Lightning's longest winning streak since a nine-game run during the 2012-13 campaign.

As for Bruno's teammates, Turner-Rush, Latanowich and freshman Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ) scored eight points apiece with Bryson nabbing eight rebounds.  This all helped the Lightning shoot 46 percent (26-of-57) from the field with nine 3-pointers.

Shippensburg's frontcourt players almost carried the team to victory as the squad shot 53 percent (24-for-45) from two-point range.  Griffith scored 21 points on 10-of-21 shooting and Knauer added 20 for the Raiders (5-5), who shot 47 percent from the floor (27-of-58) for their fourth straight setback.

Goldey-Beacom (8-5, 4-1 CACC) is on the road Sunday at Wilmington (DE) as part of a doubleheader with the men's team, starting at 1:00 pm.  It is tied with University of the Sciences for first place in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division.
