Goldey-Beacom once again played its heart out against Division I competition, but left Baltimore with an 89-83 overtime exhibition loss to Coppin State.

Because it was an exhibition, the statistics do not count and GBC (7-2) retains its six-game winning streak.

Goldey-Beacom in the first half had control most of the way, including an 8-0 run that turned an eight-point lead into a 37-21 cushion with 3:10 remaining.  Sophomore Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) netted four points in that spurt and senior Shakeem Wilson (Brooklyn, NY) ended it with a dunk.

Wilson scored 12 points in the half and senior Riyan Williams (Dunkirk, MD) added 10 for the Lightning, who grabbed a 43-31 lead by shooting 53 percent (18-of-34) from the field.  The Eagles only went for 32 percent (12-of-37) in that time and were 4-of-17 from three-point range.

The home side gave the Lightning a major scare early in the second half, using a 14-2 spurt in just under two minutes to close to 47-45 with 17:24 to play.  Josh Treadwell netted six points in that span and Tre' Thomas netted five.

GBC got it together with a 12-3 run in just under four minutes for a 59-48 lead with 13:45 left.  Wilson scored all six his points in that run – where else – from the foul line.

That appeared to be enough, except for the fact the Eagles then went on a regulation-ending 20-9 run to force overtime.  After a second timing error in the last minute and video review gave Coppin State – with no timeouts – the ability to draw a play, Dejuan Clayton was fouled and hit three free throws with 0.6 seconds left for a 78-78 tie.

Wilson converted an old-fashioned three-point play in the first minute of overtime for an 81-78 lead.  But the Eagles scored the next 11 points for an 89-81 margin in the final minute.  Terry Harris netted five points in that span for Coppin State.

Wilson finished with 25 points on 8-of-14 shooting, Taite netted 18, junior Dante Thompson (Coram, NY) scored 14 and Williams added 10 for the Lightning.

Thomas poured in 25 points and Harris added 21 for the Eagles (1-12).

A solid performance for Goldey-Beacom against Division I opposition is nothing new.  The squad earlier this season at Delaware was within one point on five different occasions in the second half before succumbing to a 64-56 setback.

Goldey-Beacom last season held a 15-point lead at Coppin State and shot 54 percent from the floor in the first half before being dealt an 80-73 loss.  The squad later that month traveled to Morgan State and nearly rallied from a 13-point deficit in the last minute before it was handed a 66-62 setback.

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Sunday to face Wilmington (DE) as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.  The men's game starts at 3:00 pm, which follows the women's 1:00 pm contest.
