Softball Ends Season With Split at Mercy

Goldey-Beacom opened its doubleheader at Mercy with a 3-2 victory before ending the season with a 5-2 setback in Dobbs Ferry, NY.

GBC in game one, the program's 1000th game since its re-instatement in 1991, grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when a groundout from sophomore Charlee King (New Castle, DE) scored freshman Kelsey Brandle (Bethlehem, PA).  The margin doubled in the fourth when an infield single from senior Asia Ellis (Marlton, NJ) plated sophomore Amber Wroble (Mechanicsville, MD).

Mercy squared the contest, 2-2, in the last of the fourth as Adriana Bencomo lined an RBI double and Baylee McCormick scored later in the frame on an error.

The Lightning grabbed the lead for good, 3-2, in the fifth.  King lined a two-out single and scored when a grounder from junior Alivia Schoff (Colora, MD) was booted by the second baseman.

Sophomore Paulynn Mao (Anaheim, CA) rapped two hits and also got the win, striking out three and allowing just two runs – one earned – and three hits over four innings to move to 2-2.  Freshman Kylie Doyle (Tower City, PA) recorded the save, striking out two and permitting just an unearned run over three innings.

Holly Pundick (2-12) struck out six over seven innings for Mercy, surrendering three runs – two earned – and five hits.  Michelle Duford had two hits.

Goldey-Beacom in game two opened a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Schoff's fly ball was dropped by the center fielder, allowing Brandle and freshman Lauren Conway (Hammonton, NJ) to cross home.

Mercy got one back in the third on Liza Ueno's RBI single for a 2-1 deficit.  It then took the lead for good, 4-2, in the last of the fourth as Anna Cochis ripped a two-run double and later scored on a passed ball.

Ellis went 3-for-3 in her final game and King added two hits.  Freshman Natalie Mickles (Dingmans Ferry, PA) allowed four runs – three earned – and seven hits over four innings for the Lightning (6-29-1).

Cochis (7-9) permitted two unearned runs and 10 hits over seven innings with three strikeouts for the Mavericks (13-36).  Morgan Lloyd went 3-for-3 and Ueno added two hits.
