Softball Drops Two at Wilmington (DE)

Playing its first road games of the season, Goldey-Beacom was handed a 3-2 tough loss that preceded an 8-0 setback at Wilmington (DE) in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action in Newark, DE.

Colby Wyatt had a hand in giving Wilmington a 2-0 lead through three innings, lining an RBI single in the first and following suit in the third.  Kelsey Doherty bumped the margin to 3-0 in the fourth as her fielder's choice plated Shannon Brantley.

GBC, which played its first 12 games this season at home, got a run back in the sixth when freshman Kelsey Brandle (Bethlehem, PA) scored on an error by right fielder Taylor Rizzotte.  It closed to 3-2 in the seventh when junior Alivia Schoff (Colora, MD) laced an RBI double, but that was as close as the visitors would get.

Dingmans Ferry, PA freshman Natalie Mickles (0-7) allowed three runs and 10 hits over six innings with a strikeout for the Lightning.

Chelsea Botsch (6-5) struck out 13 over seven innings for Wilmington, allowing two runs – one earned – and three hits.  Wyatt ended with three hits.

The Wildcats in game two struck for four runs in the last of the fifth inning to open the scoring.  Ashley Bennett lined an RBI single down the left-field line, Katrina Swank crossed home on a wild pitch and Kaitlyn Slater struck the key blow with a two-run homer.

Wilmington then tacked on four more runs in the sixth, ending the game on four consecutive hits to win via the run rule.  Keara McCarthy lined an RBI double to left field, Bennett crushed a run-scoring double to deep center, Swank laced an RBI single just inside the left-field line and Kelsey Doherty lowered the curtain with a run-scoring double to right-center field.

Tower City, PA freshman Kylie Doyle (1-5) gave up eight runs – five earned – and 11 hits with three strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings for the Lightning (1-12-1, 1-9 CACC).

Brooke Lachette (5-4) struck out eight over six innings, yielding just three hits and one walk for Wilmington (14-11, 5-5).  Bennett ended the contest 3-for-3.
