Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Rough Shooting Dooms Women’s Basketball in 49-42 Loss to USciences

Both teams struggled to find their outside shot and Goldey-Beacom could not hit a big shot late in a 49-42 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss to University of the Sciences at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

Down 27-17 midway through the third quarter, GBC scored eight straight points to close to 27-25 with 1:42 left thanks to baskets from four different players.  But USciences grabbed the momentum right back, scoring the next nine points for a 34-25 at three-quarter time that was highlighted by Sarah Abbonizio's putback at the buzzer.

The Lightning chipped away to start the fourth quarter and got within 39-35 on a great individual play from sophomore Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ), the two-time reigning member of the CACC Weekly Honor Roll.  She picked the pocket of Abbonizio and drove in for an easy layup with 3:11 left.

GBC needed a stop to further shrink its deficit, but USciences had the answer in the form of the game's biggest bucket.  Alex Thomas got the ball on the right side and canned a huge 3-pointer with 2:43 remaining for a 42-35 contest.

That bucket was the beginning of an 8-0 run that gave the Devils a 47-35 lead in the final minute with Thomas scoring five points in that spurt.

Thomas could not be stopped, scoring 11 of her team-high 15 points in the second half that included going 4-for-4 from the free throw line.  Abbonizio had 12 points and eight rebounds with Laura Trisch netting 10 points for the Devils (1-4, 1-1 CACC), who overcame shooting 28 percent (16-of-57) from the floor.

Bruno scored 15 points, sophomore Mikila Stefanski (Hammonton, NJ) netted 11, freshman Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) hauled in a personal-best 13 rebounds and sophomore Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) added 10 for the Lightning (0-6, 0-1), who shot 32 percent (18-of-56) from the floor.

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Saturday to visit New Haven for a 1:30 pm contest.
