Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Survives 56-55 Battle With Post

Goldey-Beacom needed to win a big game down the stretch and did just that, surviving a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference tussle with Post for a huge 56-55 triumph at the Jones Center.

The Lightning scored nine straight points in just under five minutes to open a 43-31 lead with 13:50 left.  Senior Chris Gebhart (Cherry Hill, NJ) netted four points in that run and ended it on a layup.

The Eagles had a lot to play for on their end and were not going to fold.  A 10-1 spurt in roughly 2 1/2 minutes got them back into the game for a 50-47 deficit with 6:10 remaining.  Jah'Sheme Ringgold scored five points in that run and Joseph Lockwood capped it with a layup.

GBC fought back, getting a layup from senior Derrick Archie (Wilmington, DE) with 2:50 left for a 56-49 lead.  Matt Mareno cut into the deficit for the Eagles thanks to a jumper with 2:35 to play for a five-point contest.

Post relied heavily on the outside shot, but could not get its attempts to fall.  It did get a free throw from Ringgold with 2:05 remaining for a 56-52 contest and got the ball back after Nardie Bogues came up with a steal with less than one minute remaining

That steal proved to be huge as Ringgold converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 23 seconds left for a 56-55 contest.  The Eagles were forced to foul and, after senior Kyle Steinbergen (Englewood, NJ) missed the front end of a one-and-one, got the ball back.

Post, which never led, waited until there were 7.6 seconds left to call timeout and set up the final play.  Ringgold got a great look just inside the top of the key, but the ball bounced off the iron.  Senior Joey Getz (Philadelphia, PA) won a huge battle for the ball underneath the basket for the Lightning and dribbled out the clock.

Gebhart ended with 18 points and seven rebounds, Getz had 17 and eight and sophomore Parris Ridgeway-Higgs (New Castle, DE) added 10 and five for the Lightning, who shot 47 percent (22-of-47) from the floor.

Mareno had 14 points and 11 rebounds with Lockwood scoring 12 points for the Eagles, who shot 35 percent (21-of-60) from the floor and only 4-of-25 from three-point range.

The Lightning (7-13, 4-8 CACC) moved within 1 1/2 games of Wilmington-DE (6-7) for fourth place in the CACC South Division and the final conference tournament spot.  Post (9-10, 8-5) is third in the North Division.

Goldey-Beacom hits the road Monday for a re-scheduled CACC game at Georgian Court.  The contest begins at 8:00 pm, which follows the women's 6:00 pm game in Lakewood, NJ.
