WILMINGTON, Del. - Freshman
Maria Angeles Victoria Martinez (Totana, Spain) has been named as the recipient of the 2013-14 Goldey-Beacom College Department of Athletics Female Newcomer of the Year award, it has been announced by Director of Athletics
Chuck Hammond.
The award, which is presented on a yearly basis, was voted upon by the members of the Department of Athletics staff in addition to Goldey-Beacom head coaches.
Playing primarily as the Lightning's No. 3 singles player, Martinez compiled an 11-6 singles record, including a 3-3 mark against Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opponents. An honorable mention on the All-CACC women's tennis team, she also earned a spot on the CACC's All-Tournament Team after a pair of wins against Concordia in the CACC semifinals.
One of three freshmen on the 2013-14 roster for Coach
Joe Kissel, Martinez won seven of her final nine matches. She also boasted a 13-6 doubles mark, including a 10-6 record at the No. 2 flight with junior
Stephanie Puentes Robinson (Bogota, Colombia).
It is the second straight year a member of the Lightning women's tennis team has won the award after
Rocio Cabanillas Moreno (Sevilla, Spain) earned the honor last year.
