Tianna Smith (Paramus Catholic H.S./Nanuet, N.Y.) and sophomore guard
Ariel Wilson (Lake Taylor H.S./Chesapeake, Va.) each scored 13 points as Bloomfield College (13-8, 11-3) earned its fifth win in the last six games with a 65-53 victory over Goldey-Beacom College (10-12, 7-8) in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game at the Joseph West Jones College Center on Saturday afternoon.
In earning the victory over the Lightning, the Deacons were able to hold onto first place in the CACC North Division standings with an 11-3 record. They have a two-game lead over Caldwell for the top spot in the North Division.
Led by a pair of field goals from Smith, the Deacons opened the game with a 6-0 run. But, the Lightning answered by scoring 20 of the next 25 points to take a 20-11 lead on a three-point field goal by junior guard
Shantia Creech (Hunt H.S./Philadelphia, Pa.) with 6:29 remaining.
After Bloomfield went on a 15-4 run over the next six minutes to reclaim a two-point edge with 44 seconds remaining in the opening stanza, the Lightning used a three-point field goal from junior guard
Taylor Leonard (John A. Coleman Catholic H.S./Lake Katrine, N.Y.) to take a 27-26 advantage into the intermission.
Trailing by the one-point margin, the Deacons began the second half by going on a 15-2 run, including six points from Wilson, to take a commanding 41-29 lead with 14:35 left in regulation. The Lightning scored 10 of the next 15 points to trim the deficit to 46-39 with 10:11 remaining, but were unable to get any closer.
Wilson made five of nine shots from the floor and three of four free throw attempts en route to scoring 13 points while Smith connected on 4 of 10 field goal attempts along with a 5-for-9 performance from the free throw line. Smith also added five steals in the victory.
Junior forward
Chelsea Grover (Seneca H.S./Southampton, N.J.) led the Lightning in the loss by recording her fourth "double double" of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds while Creech and junior guard
Lillian Chukwueze (Cherry Hill East H.S./Cherry Hill, N.J.) each contributed a team-high 11 points.
The Lightning, who lost for the second time in the last three games, will begin a two-game road trip on Saturday, Feb. 15 with a 1 p.m. CACC game against Caldwell. It will be a rematch of last year's CACC semifinal game, which was won in double overtime by the Cougars.
