WILMINGTON, Del. - Entering its regular season finale against Philadelphia University, the Goldey-Beacom College men's basketball team knew two things needed to happen if the Lightning wanted to return to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament - they had to beat the Rams and Holy Family had to defeat Chestnut Hill on Tuesday evening.

While Holy Family defeated Chestnut Hill, the Rams spoiled the Lightning's plans by handing Goldey-Beacom a 75-71 loss in the regular season finale for both teams at the Joseph West Jones College Center.

The loss ended the Lightning's season with a 10-16 overall record and an 8-11 CACC mark while giving the Rams their 11th win in the last 12 games. Now 22-6 overall and 16-3 in the CACC, the Rams will be the top seed in the upcoming eight-team tournament that begins on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore forward Peter Alexis (Holy Redeemer H.S./Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) led the Rams to the victory by scoring a game-high 23 points with seven rebounds. He made 10 of 15 shots from the floor and three of seven free throws en route to posting his 11th 20-point game of the season.

Meanwhile, sophomore forward Derek Johnson (Atlantic Christian H.S./Conshohocken, Pa.) added 16 points by making 6 of 12 field goal attempts, including a 3-for-6 effort from three-point range.

Freshman guard Donte McGill (Mont Clare Academy/Newark, Del.) led the Lightning in the loss by tallying a game-high 23 points, connecting on 11 of 18 shots from the field. McGill, who posted his seventh 20-point game of the season, also recorded five rebounds and three assists. Meanwhile, junior center Chris Gebhart (Cherry Hill West H.S./Cherry Hill, N.J.) added 10 points with eight rebounds and two blocked shots.

Playing in the final game of his college career, senior forward Will Williams (Keystone National H.S./Flushing, N.Y.) scored 10 points with five rebounds while playing 33 minutes for the Lightning. He was honored in a pre-game ceremony by the team.

The Rams, who never trailed in the game, surged out to a 22-9 lead in the opening eight minutes of the first half before the Lightning trimmed the deficit to 25-16 by scoring 7 of the next 10 points. After the Rams used a 10-4 surge to extend the lead to 35-20, the Lightning closed the gap to 38-27 with 2:00 left in the opening stanza.

The teams traded field goals to give Philadelphia University a 40-30 lead at the intermission.

In the second half, the Lightning were able to get within a one-point margin twice, but the Rams were able to hold them off to earn the victory.
