Lightning Women Fall to Defending Champs, 62-52, in Season Opener

Chukwueze Leads Way with 17 Points, Bryson Nets 16

North Andover, Mass.- The Goldey-Beacom women's basketball  gave the defending NCAA Division II champion, Bentley University, a run for their money on Friday evening before falling 62-52. Bentley, who finished the 2013-2014 season with a perfect 35 wins, 0 loss record returned only two of the nine players who action during their championship run.

The Lightning (0-1) were led by senior guard Lillian Chukwueze (Cherry Hill East H.S./ Cherry Hill, N.J.) who dropped in 17 points on 50 percent shooting from the floor (8-16) and pulled down 7 rebounds. Freshman forward Britani Bryson (Bethel H.S./ Hampton, Va.) had a promising debut for the Lightning as she made her inside presence known as she scored 16 points on 7 of 14 shooting from the floor. Bryson also knocked down the Lightning's only two free throw attempts from the game.

The Falcons, who never trailed in the contest were led by Trevena Bennett and Jen Gemma who tallied 18 points and 17 point respectively.
 
The Lightning cut the Falcon lead to one point at the 10:15 mark in the second half on a jumper from Chukwueze,  however the Falcons responded with a 9-0 run over the next four minutes to put the game out of reach.

The Lightning have a quick turnaround as they will take on their second Northeast-10 conference opponent in as many days when they will take on host squad, Merrimack College, this afternoon starting at 3:30 PM.
