Men's Basketball Kicks Off 2014-15 Campaign with 83-77 Win Over Queens

Wilmington, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom's men's basketball team opened the 2014-15 season with an 83-77 victory over Queens College at the Joseph West Jones Center on Friday night.

The Lightning (1-0) had four players in double-figures, as sophomore guard Sameen Swint (Timber Creek H.S./ Sicklerville, N.J.) led the team in scoring as he put up 21 points in his Goldey debut. Junior Domineek Owens (Paul Robeson H.S./ Philadelphia, Pa.) chipped in with 15 points, senior transfer Joey Getz (Archbishop Wood H.S./ Philadelphia, Pa.) had 14 and Parris Ridgeway-Higgs (Hodgson Vo-Tech H.S./ New Castle, Del.) rounded out with 11. Leading the way for the Knights (0-1) was red-shirt senior Jeremiah Mordi who had a game-high 32 points, and Travis Whitfield had the only double-double of the game with 24 points and 11 rebounds.

Goldey-Beacom opened the game with a dunk from freshman guard Daniel Cooper (West Orange-South Dade H.S./ Homestead, Fl.) as the Lightning would take a 4-1 lead with 17:47 remaining. Queen's would take their largest lead of the first half as Mordi converted a three-point play, 13-10, with 13:25 left. The Lightning went on a 10-0 run to regain the lead, and then took their largest lead, 28-20, at the 7:34 mark. The Knights pulled within two, 41-39, to close out the half.

The Lightning only fell behind once in the second half at the 14:44 mark, and they never looked back as they led by as many as nine points twice – once at the 5:31 mark and again at the 4:33 marker.

Goldey-Beacom shot 56 percent (22-of-39)from the field with a 52 percent (9-of-17) effort from beyond the arch and 68.2 percent (30-of-44) from the free throw line. The Knights shot 50 percent (26-of-52) from the floor, 26 percent (4-of-15) on three point attempts and 61 percent (21-of-34) from the charity stripe.

The Lightning continue non- conference action tomorrow when they face off against the University of the District of Columbia at the Jones Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
