Opening Tip-Off
Hoping to earn their third consecutive victory, the Lightning will finish their quick two-game road trip on Saturday afternoon by traveling to Dominican College to face the Chargers in a key Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest. Opening tip-off at the Hennessy Center is slated for approximately 3 p.m. or 25 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game between Goldey-Beacom and Dominican. Updating the Lightning
Now 8-15 overall and 4-10 in the CACC, the Lightning remain in the hunt for a playoff berth after posting their third win in the last four games with a 72-62 come-from-behind victory at Nyack on Wednesday evening. The Lightning, who won back-to-back games for just the second time this season, overcame a nine-point deficit at the intermission by holding the Warriors to just 20 points in the second half. Junior guard A.J. Picard led four Goldey-Beacom players in double figures by scoring 19 points while sophomore guard Marcus Porter contributed 14 points. In addition, sophomore guard Kyle Steinbergin and junior forward Will Williams each came off the bench to add 10 points. Porter is the Lightning's leading scorer with a 16.9 average while Picard is adding 15.2 points per contest.
Scouting Dominican
Currently 19-5 overall and 13-3 in the CACC, the Chargers have clinched the North Division regular season championship and will be looking to reach the 20-win mark for the 10th time in school history when they host the Lightning on Saturday afternoon. It would also be the Chargers' first 20-win season as an NCAA Division II program and the first 20-win campaign since winning 20 games in 2001-02. However, the Chargers have lost two of their last three games following a tough 98-95 setback in triple overtime at Philadelphia University on Thursday evening. Senior guard Leon Porter scoed a season-high 33 points in a losing effort for the Chargers while leading all players with seven assists. Porter is the Chargers' leading scorer with a 15.0 average while senior Cory Quimby, the reigning CACC Co-Player of the Year, is contributing 13.5 points per outing.
Series Business: Dominican
The Lightning and the Chargers will be meeting for the 18th time in a series that Dominican leads by a 12-5 margin. However, the Lightning have won the last two affairs, including an exciting overtime victory in last year's CACC semifinals at Caldwell. After losing the first eight games against Dominican, the Lightning have won five of the last nine contests. They earned their first win over the Chargers on Jan. 17, 2006, a 58-45 triumph at the Joseph West Jones College Center as Nate Lewis scored a game-high 19 points with six rebounds.
A Look at Last Year's Meetings
The Lightning earned a pair of victories over the Chargers last season, winning by a 76-74 margin during the regular season before earning a 72-66 overtime victory in the semifinals of the CACC Men's Basketball Championship at Caldwell College. In the regular season meeting between the two teams, sophomore guard Marcus Porter scored a career-high 32 points as the Lightning overcame a 21-point deficit with 17:46 left in the game to earn the two-point victory. Goldey-Beacom shot a blistering 62 per cent from the field in the second half. In the CACC Tournament affair, graduate student forward Rich Flemming posted a "double double" with 26 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Lightning to a win over the Chargers in a game that featured 11 ties and 12 lead changes. The Chargers were led by senior Cory Quimby, who had 24 points and nine rebounds.
Streaks, Storylines and Sidebars
• After dropping seven straight games from Dec. 19 to Jan. 26, the Lightning have won three of their last four games. They have scored at least 75 points in each of those four games, including 86 points in the overtime win against Lincoln on Feb. 6.
• Of the Lightning's eight wins this season, four of them have come at home. In addition, the win over Lincoln snapped a four-game home losing streak.
• After edging Lincoln by an 86-83 margin last Wednesday night, the Lightning improved to 2-0 in overtime games this season. In addition, the Lightning have now won six straight overtime games, dating back to the 2010-11 season.
• The Lightning enter Saturday's game ranked second in the CACC by averaging 4.2 blocked shots per game. They have recorded 27 blocked shots in the last seven games after a six-block effort against Nyack on Wednesday night.
• Sophomore guard Marcus Porter became the second Goldey-Beacom player to score 30 points in a game this season with his 30-point effort against Lincoln last Wednesday. On Jan. 15, junior guard A.J. Picard recorded a career-high 38 points in a 105-99 loss against Chestnut Hill.
• Over the last four games, Porter is averaging 21.0 points per game with at least 20 points in three of the four outings. He has also grabbed 45 rebounds in the last four games, including a career-high 14 rebounds against Felician and Lincoln.
• Porter has also scored 10 or more points in 23 consecutive games, dating back to last season.
• After averaging just 1.7 points per game in his first seven games this season, sophomore guard Kyle Steinbergin has averaged 11.7 points per game in his last seven outings. He has also scored 10 or more points in six of those seven contests after scoring 10 points against Nyack on Wednesday night.
Porter Earns Second Straight CACC Honorable Mention Selection
After scoring a season-high 30 points in the Lightning's win over Lincoln last Wednesday, sophomore guard Marcus Porter earned his second straight honorable mention selection for the CACC's weekly awards on Monday afternoon. The Lightning's leading scorer with a 16.9 average, Porter made 11 of 23 shots from the floor in the 86-83 triumph and also matched his career high by grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds.
Livingston Sets Goldey-Beacom Career and Single-Season Blocks Records
Senior forward Lawrence Livingston has rewritten the Goldey-Beacom men's basketball single-season and career blocks record during his final year in a Lightning uniform. Entering Wednesday's game against Nyack, the Dover, Del. native has posted 107 blocks in his career, surpassing the previous school record of 98 that was set by Derek Savage from 2004-08. In addition, he broke Savage's single-season record on Feb. 2 against Felician with three blocks and now has 44 blocks in 22 games this year. Livingston ranks second in the CACC this season and 23rd in NCAA Division II through games of Feb. 10.
30 Something for Porter
Sophomore guard Marcus Porter recorded the second 30-point game of his college career in the Lightning's 86-83 victory over Lincoln last Wednesday night at the Joseph West Jones College Center. He also had a career-high 32 points in the Lightning's win over Dominican last year at the Jones Center. Porter, who is the Lightning's leading scorer with a 16.9 average, has tallied 20 or more points five times this year, including three of his last four games. He has also moved into 11th place on the Lightning's all-time scoring list with 840 career points.
What's Ahead for Goldey-Beacom
The Lightning will return home on Tuesday, Feb. 19 to host Philadelphia University in the penultimate home game of the season at the Joseph West Jones College Center. Opening tip-off between the Rams and the Lightning is slated for 8 p.m. or approximately 25 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game. The Rams defeated the Lightning by a 74-53 margin in the first meeting between the two teams on Jan. 23. The Rams lead the all-time series by a 10-6 margin.
