WILMINGTON, Del. – Senior guard
Isiah Mason (Cardinal Dougherty H.S./Philadelphia, Pa.) came off the bench to score a game-high 16 points as Wilmington University (3-11, 3-4) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 69-60 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College (5-10, 2-5) at the Lightning's Joseph West Jones College Center on Tuesday evening.
Led by Mason, the Wildcats earned their first road victory of the season while posting a sweep of the season series against the local rivals. Wilmington defeated Goldey-Beacom by a 65-63 margin on Dec. 10 at the Wilmington University Athletics Complex.
The Lightning jumped out to an early 11-3 lead in the opening nine minutes, including five points from junior guard
A.J. Picard (Souderton Area H.S./Skippack, Pa.). But, five consecutive points from Mason trimmed the Wildcats' deficit to 11-8 with 9:51 remaining in the stanza.
After the Lightning upped their lead to 15-10, the Wildcats scored 10 of the next 14 points, including five points from Mason, to take a 20-19 advantage with 6:13 left in the first half.
Led by four points from freshman guard
Gio Atkins (Wissahickon H.S./Blue Bell, Pa.), the Lightning used an 13-7 run over the final six minutes to take a 32-26 advantage into the intermission.
Trailing by a six-point margin, the Wildcats opened the second half by scoring 12 of the first 19 points to narrow the margin to 39-38 with 16:15 remaining on a lay-up by freshman guard
Shai Henry (Middle Township H.S./Cape May Court House, N.J.). But, five straight points from the Lightning upped the Goldey-Beacom cushion to 44-38 with 14:42 left.
Mason ignited a quick 9-3 spurt by the Wildcats with six points as Wilmington tied the game at 47-47 with 8:42 remaining. But, the Lightning answered with four consecutive points to regain a 51-47 edge with 7:17 remaining.
Trailing by four points, the Wildcats began to make their comeback by scoring seven consecutive points for a 54-51 lead with 5:07 left. After a pair of free throws from senior forward
Lawrence Livingston (Caesar Rodney H.S./Dover, Del.) narrowed the gap to 54-53, the Wildcats tallied seven of the next eight points for a 61-54 advantage with 2:53 left on a pair of free throws from senior guard
Andrew Corrigan (Hodgson Vo-Tech H.S./Newark, Del.).
The Wildcats secured the victory by making 8 of their final 10 free throws over the final two minutes.
In leading the Wildcats to the victory, Mason made 5 of 11 field goal attempts in addition to converting all five of his free throw attempts. Meanwhile, senior guard
James Pee (William Penn H.S./Newark, Del.) added 15 points with four rebounds and two steals.
Sophomore guard
Marcus Porter (Howard H.S./Wilmington, Del.) came off the bench to lead the Lightning with his fourth “double double” in his last five games. He scored a team-high 14 points while grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds.
Meanwhile, sophomore guard
Charles Jackson (Brandywine H.S./Wilmington, Del.) posted a career-high 11 rebounds while scoring eight points.
The Lightning, who have lost six of their last eight games, will travel to Holy Family University on Saturday afternoon for a 3 p.m. CACC game against the Tigers.
