Updating the Lightning
Currently 5-9 overall and 2-4 in the CACC, the Lightning have dropped five of their last seven games after a tough 61-58 setback against Bloomfield on Saturday afternoon at the Bloomfield Gym. After falling behind by a 39-13 margin, the Lightning rallied to trim the deficit to three points but were unable to get any closer. Sophomore guard Charles Jackson scored 17 points to lead the Lightning in the loss while junior guard A.J. Picard added 14 points. In addition, junior forward Jordan Thorpe added a game-high 15 rebounds in addition to eight points and three blocked shots. Sophomore guard Marcus Porter is the Lightning's leading scorer with a 15.9 average and ranks second on the team with a 6.0 rebounding average.
Scouting Wilmington
After dropping a tough 72-68 overtime verdict against CACC North Division-leading Dominican, the Wildcats will bring a 2-11 overall record and a 2-4 CACC mark into Tuesday night's contest against the Lightning. Junior guard Herbert Dennis, who scored a team-high 16 points with six rebounds, had a chance to win the game for the Wildcats at the end of regulation against the Chargers, but his 15-foot jumper rimmed out to force the extra period. Meanwhile, senior forward Brandon Fox scored 16 points with eight rebounds while senior guard James Pee contributed 13 points with four rebounds and two steals. The Wildcats, who will be playing their first road game since a 78-77 loss at Felician on Dec. 8, are led by Dennis, who is averaging 12.8 points per game and leads the team with 54 assists and 12 steals. Meanwhile, Fox leads the Wildcats by averaging 6.9 rebounds per outing while scoring 12.2 points per contest.
Series Business: Wilmington
Since the start of the 2001-02 season, the Lightning and the Wildcats have met 24 times in a series that Goldey-Beacom leads by a commanding 20-4 margin, including a victory in the 2010 CACC quarterfinals. However, the Wildcats snapped a six-game losing streak against their nearby rivals with a 65-63 victory on Dec. 10 at the Wilmington University Athletics Complex. It was the Wildcats' first win since the 2009-10 season.
A Look at This Year's Earlier Meeting
Senior forward Brandon Fox made 7 of 13 shots from the floor and scored a team-high 19 points as Wilmington held off a late rally by the Lightning to earn its second win in the last three games, a 65-63 CACC victory at the Wilmington University Athletics Complex on Dec. 10. The Lightning had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, but a three-point attempt by sophomore guard Marcus Porter fell short as time expired. While Fox led the Wildcats to the victory, senior guard Isiah Mason contributed 13 points off the bench along with three rebounds and three assists. Meanwhile, Porter scored a season-high 24 points with a game-high 12 rebounds in a losing effort for the Lightning.
Points for Porter
After recording his second 20-point performance in the last three games with 20 points at Chestnut Hill on Dec. 19, sophomore guard Marcus Porter upped his team-high scoring average to 15.9 points per game. The eighth-leading scorer in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, Porter has scored at least 10 points in all 13 games he has played this season. In addition, he has scored at least 10 points in 37 of 41 career games, including 12 games with at least 20 points. With 675 career points, the Wilmington, Del. native ranks 14th on the Lightning's all-time scoring list.
Block Party
Entering Tuesday night's game against Wilmington, senior forward Lawrence Livingston ranks second in the CACC with 32 blocks in 13 games this season, a 2.46 average. He ranks 13th in NCAA Division II in blocks per game through games of Jan. 6. Livingston, who is the lone senior on this year's team, ranks second in school history with 95 career blocks and needs four blocks to become the Lightning's all-time leader.
