ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – Sophomore forward
Nicole Arnone (Moore Catholic H.S./Staten Island, N.Y.) scored 12 of her game-high 16 points in the second half as Molloy College (3-4) overcame a four-point half-time deficit to snap a three-game losing streak with a 60-52 non-conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College (7-6) at the Lions' Quealy Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.
After falling behind by a 31-27 margin at the intermission, the Lions outscored Goldey-Beacom by 33-21 in the second half to earn the victory and end the Lightning's four-game win streak.
Led by Arnone, the Lions opened the second half by scoring 20 of the first 26 points in the first 13 minutes to take a 47-38 lead on a pair of free throws by senior forward
Ikema Ross (Bellport H.S./East Patchogue, N.Y.).
But, the Lightning answered by scoring 12 of the next 17 points, including seven made free throws in eight attempts, to trim the margin to 52-50 with 2:31 remaining in regulation on a lay-up by freshman
Monique Cheek (Teaneck H.S./Teaneck, N.J.).
However, the Lions clinched the victory by scoring eight consecutive points in the final two minutes.
Led by four points from senior forward
Irene Hudson (Corcoran H.S./Syracuse, N.Y.), the Lightning jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead in the first three minutes of the first half. The Lions answered with five straight points before Goldey-Beacom put together a 6-0 run to extend its advantage to 14-6 with 14:55 remaining in the first half.
The Lions narrowed the gap to 17-16 with 12:05 left in the period before the Lightning countered by going on a 12-2 run for its biggest lead of the game at 29-18 with 8:03 left on a lay-up by senior guard
Devonne Richardson (Milford Mill Academy/Baltimore, Md.).
But, Molloy answered by scoring 9 of the final 11 points to end the half with a four-point deficit.
In leading the Lions to the victory, Arnone made 6 of 12 shots from the floor and was 2-for-3 from the free throw line. She also had four rebounds and one assist. Meanwhile, freshman guard
Alex Hampton (Baldwin H.S./Baldwin, N.Y.) contributed 10 points with eight rebounds and three assists.
Hudson led the Lightning in a losing effort by scoring a team-high 15 points, making 5 of 14 field goal attempts and 5 of 10 free throw attempts. She also had four rebounds and two assists.
In addition, Richardson contributed 10 points with eight rebounds and three assists.
The Lightning, who are in the middle of a three-game road trip, will be idle until Wednesday, Dec. 19 when they resume their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule at Chestnut Hill at 12 p.m. Meanwhile, the Lions will travel to Merrimack on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 2 p.m.
