Adelphi Surges Past Men's Basketball for 68-46 Victory

Marcus Porter Scores 16 Points in Loss for Lightning

BRIDGEPORT, Conn.
– Senior forward Bradley Simpson (Goulburn, Australia) scored a game-high 18 points, including 14 in the first half, and added eight rebounds to Adelphi University (1-1) to its first win of the season, a 68-46 victory over Goldey-Beacom College (0-2) in the University of Bridgeport Men's Basketball Classic at Hubbell Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon.

Led by Simpson, the Panthers sprinted out to a 37-14 lead in the first half by connecting on 46.9 per cent of their field goal attempts. In addition to scoring 14 of his 18 points in the opening stanza, Simpson contributed six rebounds.

Meanwhile, the Panther defense held Goldey-Beacom to just 18.2 per cent shooting from the field in the first half while limiting the Lightning without a field goal for the first 8:26 of the game.  

In the second half, senior guard RJ Samuels (Life Center Academy/Trenton, N.J.) scored 8 of his 10 points as Adelphi shot 50.0 per cent from the field while maintaining its lead. The Panthers led by as many as 32 points with 7:07 remaining on a free throw by Simpson.

While Simpson led the Panthers with 18 points, Samuels contributed 10 points with three rebounds. He made four of five field goal attempts and both of his free throw attempts.

Sophomore guard Marcus Porter (Howard H.S./Wilmington, Del.) led the Lightning in a losing effort with 16 points, making five of nine field goal attempts and five of six free throws. Meanwhile, freshman guard Will Williams (Eldon Academy/Flushing, N.Y.) added six points with a game-high eight rebounds.

The Lightning will travel to Towson University on Monday night for an exhibition game against the Tigers. Opening tip-off from the Towson Center is set for 7 p.m. Goldey-Beacom will resume its regular season schedule on Saturday, Nov. 17 by hosting Bentley at 1 p.m.
