BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Senior forward Trevon Hamlet (Bishop Loughlin H.S./Brooklyn, N.Y.) made 12 of 16 shots from the floor and scored a game-high 28 points as Southern Connecticut State (1-0) built an early lead en route to a 94-77 non-conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College (0-1) in the season opener for both teams at the Hubbell Gymnasium on Saturday evening.

The 94 points marked the highest single-game total allowed by the Lightning since the 2011 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship Game when Bloomfield earned the title with a 94-81 triumph over Goldey-Beacom.

Led by eight points, including a pair of three-point field goals, from junior Greg Langston (St. Joseph's H.S./Stratford, Conn.), the Owls raced to a 15-4 lead in the first six minutes of the game. From there, Southern Connecticut State led by as many as 17 points to build a 46-29 advantage at the intermission.

Hamlet scored 15 of his 28 points in the first half while Langston added 11 points for the Owls.

In the second half, the Owls never trailed by fewer than 11 points as Hamlet and Langston continued their impressive shooting efforts. Hamlet made five of seven shots from the floor in the second half while freshman forward Stefon Williams (Kent School/Jamaica, N.Y.) contributed 14 points off the bench in his college debut.

While Hamlet led the Owls to the victory, Langston added 17 points by making 6 of 12 field goal attempts along with three of four free throws. He also had a game-high seven assists along with three steals.

Sophomore guard Marcus Porter (Howard H.S./Wilmington, Del.) led the Lightning by scoring 18 points with eight rebounds and four assists while junior guard A.J. Picard (Souderton Area H.S./Skippack, Pa.) added 13 points with a team-high five assists.

The Lightning, who are in the middle of playing three games in three days, will continue their season on Sunday afternoon when they play against Adelphi in the University of Bridgeport Men's Basketball Classic at 2 p.m.
