Wilmington, DE – Lightning hand Philadelphia University first CACC loss
In an overtime thriller, the Goldey-Beacom College men's basketball team handed Philadelphia University their first CACC loss in almost two years (27 games) last night at the Joseph West Jones Center.
The Lightning led for most of the first half, with the margin stretching as wide as seven points, before the Rams closed within 26-22 at the break. From the start of the second half, the Lightning held the advantage, opening up a 52-43 lead on a lay-up by junior guard Kyle White with 5:48 remaining in regulation. With a 15-4 run, the Rams were on top 60-58, with 10 seconds remaining. After a GBC timeout, Kyle White found junior Adrian Miles for a running jumper with 1.6 seconds remaining, to force overtime.
The Lightning made the most of their first overtime game of the season, by surging to a seven-point lead (67-60), with only 2:35 left on the clock. The Rams eventually found their offense, and cut the Lightning lead down to two, but clutch free throw shooting sealed a 74-70 win for the host.
Kyle White led the Lightning with 19 points, 3 steals, 3 assists and 3 rebounds, while Adrian Miles added 14 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Sophomore Azeez Ellegood filled the stat line with 14 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.
The Lightning will head to the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia on Tuesday, February 10, 2009 for an 8:00pm game.
