PHILADELPHIA – The Goldey-Beacom College women's basketball team went on a furious 11-0 run in the last two minutes of regulation to pull within two, but Chestnut Hill College closed out the game on a 4-0 run to hand the Lightning a 60-54 loss in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play at the Sorgenti Arena.
GBC falls to 1-6 overall, and 0-3 in the CACC. The Lightning have now lost three straight games. The Griffins, winless through their first eight games, improved to 1-8 (1-2 CACC).
This CACC battle between two South Division rivals featured 60 combined turnovers by both teams, including a season-high 31 by GBC. Still the visiting Lightning were within five points through most of the first half before CHC was able to separate for a 26-19 halftime lead on the aggressive play of forward Chanta'l Hardy. Hardy and fellow forward Lindsay Alexander led the Griffins with six points apiece in the opening period. Jones led the Lightning with seven.
The Griffins defense continued to give GBC trouble in the beginning of the second half as CHC extended its lead to 49-35 with 7:37 remaining. Jones and junior guard Janae Weldon led a late Lightning push at the end, but it was too little too late as the Lightning fell six points short.
Three of GBC's six losses have come by six points or less this season.
The Lightning will try to regroup on Mon. night as they visit non-league opponent, Millersville University at 6 p.m.
