Wilmington, DE – Lightning split weekend at Wilmington University Tip-Off Classic
The Lightning men's basketball team traveled cross-town for the Wilmington University Tip-Off Classic. The Lightning first faced off against St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday, November 21, 2008. The tug and war contest between the Lightning and St. Thomas Aquinas had six tied scores and seven lead changes in the first half, but saw the Spartans take a 3 point advantage at the half.
St. Thomas Aquinas started the second half on a 16-5 run that helped established a 47-33 lead for the Spartans. However, the Lightning came storming back late in the second half with a 13-1 charge to bring the game to a 5 point deficit with 2 minutes left. A three pointer with 4 seconds remaining from junior guard Adrian Miles (16 points, 3-4 from 3) brought the Lightning within two (68-66), but made foul shots at the end helped seal the victory for St. Thomas Aquinas. Junior Kyle White (17 points, 3-5 from distance, six rebounds, six assists) and frontcourt classmate Anthony Parham (12 points, nine rebounds) helped lead the Lightning.
The next day of the tournament, the Lightning were back on the court to face off against Penn State University Abington. The Lightning leaving behind the loss from the day before went out on the court and took control from the tip scoring the first five points of the game. The Lightning never let up and led at the end of the first half 43-30.
The second half was a dominating half for the Lightning, as they out-shot PSU Abington 29 to 13 in field goals. The Lightning defeated PSU Abington 110-72.
Kyle White led the Lightning for the weekend with 38 points, 13 rebounds, 9 assists and 2 steals, while Adrian Miles contributed 34 points, 9 rebounds, 10 assists and 3 steals. Darrell Johnson added 24 points, 13 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 assists for the weekend.
The Lightning will next travel to Kutztown University on November 25, 2008 for a 7:00pm game.
