Former Goldey-Beacom Men's Soccer goalkeeper Suhail Bismilla recently penned a blog that appeared on the Lightning Studio website, offering suggestions how to control your mindset in this difficult time.

Bismilla was a four-year starter for the Lightning (2015-18) and the unquestioned leader of this dynamic group.  His credentials include being named third team CoSIDA Academic All-America in 2017 as well as first team All-CACC both in 2016 and 2017.  He is just one of six student-athletes in the College's history to be tabbed CoSIDA Academic All-America.  Bismilla in 2017 also was the Men's Soccer winner of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Top XVI Award, given to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA participating at the finals site for each CACC championship.  Recently, he was in Indianapolis for the NCAA Emerging Leaders Seminar.

His blog is listed below and is entitled: Current Pandemic: A Time To Rediscover Yourself

A change in mindset goes a long way in seeing the blessing in every situation.

During this time of uncertainty, turmoil and panic, it is easy for us to become despondent, depressed and frustrated. However, if we change the way we look at everything around us and the current situation that we are facing, we can change this time into to something special.

Here are some of my personal tips to help change our outlook.

1. Change self-isolation into self-discovery or self-re-discovery. This is a unique time where we have been offered an opportunity to, in a way, detox from society and societal pressures. Why not use this time to reflect, introspect and contemplate? Reflect on the things that you have done, the choices (good and bad) that you have made and the things you used to do. Then look within yourself and evaluate those things and ask yourself whether it benefited you in some way, shape or form. Are there things that you would have done differently, and how can you use that knowledge gained to better equip yourself for the future. Finally, spend time contemplating where you want to be in the next few years and begin to map out ways to reach that envisioned destination. I mean how many of us can honestly and truly say that we can answer the questions, "who am I?" or "what is my purpose in this world"

2. Change the idea of social distancing to the idea of social bonding with those who are closest and most beloved to you.

Reconnect with your families. Talk to your kids and your spouses, ask them all the questions you previously were too busy to ask or too busy to even think of. Learn about them, their interests, their dislikes, their friends, help them with their homework (or let them teach you about their homework lol), have family movie nights, cook together, laugh together, straighten the bond that might of been weakened and lost during our busy lives. When again may you have the opportunity to spend 2, 3 or 4 weeks of absolute quality time with those you love most?

We are living in unprecedented times. there is no telling how the world will be after this pandemic, but one thing is for sure is that through a change in mindset we will all come back stronger, more self-aware and, most importantly, we will come back from this together as one.

I pray that God cures those are sick, heals those are wounded, grants patience to those who are hurting and gives all the strength to overcome this difficult time and makes us all stronger and more united than we have ever been before.

Take care and stay safe.  <>

Love,
Sulz
