Women's Tennis Falls in CACC Championship, 5-2 to Concordia

Concordia Takes 6th Straight CACC Title



Philadelphia, Pa.- The Goldey-Beacom Women's Tennis team saw its highly successful Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference season come to an end by the hands of Concordia College, 5-2, in the final.
 
In a "race to five" format, the Clippers jumped out to a 2-1 lead in doubles competition when CACC Player of the Year, Romana Tabak paired with Costanza Mecchi to defeat the Lightning team of Filipa Correia (Monte Estoril, Portugal) and Maria Victoria (Totana, Spain), 8-2.

Linda Eliasson and Steffy Canals pushed the match to 2-0 when they defeated the Lightning pairing of Nina Sengl (Puchheim, Germany) and Anastasia Melnikova (Vladivostok, Russia), 8-5.

The Lightning pulled one point from the doubles competition when Amina Mrad (Berlin, Germany) and Stephanie Puentes Robinson (Bogota, Colombia) earned an 8-4 victory over Alla Kravchuk and Valeriia Cheban.

Singles play was the deciding factor for the Clippers as they won three out of the next four matches to lock up their sixth consecutive CACC title. The lone singles winner for the Lightning was Mrad as she defeated Cheban at the number five singles slot, 6-2, 6-2.

Three Lightning participants were honored as 2014 CACC Women's Tennis All-Tournament Team. Puentes Robinson earned all-tournament team recognition after going 2-1 during the weekend with one match unfinished. Mrad posted an impressive 3-1 record after earning two wins at number five singles. Newcomer Julia Gutierrez (Quart, Spain) received the all-tournament team nod after posting an impressive 6-0, 6-1 win at number four singles on Saturday versus Chestnut Hill, and was beating Concordia's, Eliasson, 7-6,2-1 before they match was called.
