WILMINGTON, Del. - Here is a list of post-game notes after the Lightning's 63-42 victory over Post on Saturday afternoon in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's basketball quarterfinals.
On to the Next One – After earning an impressive 63-42 victory over Post University on Saturday afternoon, the Lightning will advance to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference semifinals on Friday, Mar. 8 at Bobby Morgan Arena on the campus of the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.
The Lightning, who are the number two seed in the CACC's South Division, will face North Division champion Caldwell in the first semifinal at 12 p.m. The Cougars, who upped their win streak to 14 consecutive games, took care of Philadelphia University by a 72-50 margin in a quarterfinal game at the Newman Center on Saturday afternoon.
20 Something – By defeating the Eagles on Saturday afternoon, the Lightning reached the 20-win mark for the first time in school history and broke the single-season record for wins that they set last year. In fact, it is the first time in GBC basketball history (either men's or women's) that a Lightning team has won 20 games in the same season.
The Lightning became the second team in the CACC to reach 20 wins this season. Holy Family, which claimed the South Division regular season title, improved to 25-2 on Saturday with a victory over Bloomfield at the Campus Center.
Richardson Grounds the Eagles – If there is one Goldey-Beacom player that the Eagles are happy to see graduating, it has to be senior guard
Devonne Richardson, who has caused all sorts of nightmares for Post during her career. In Saturday's CACC quarterfinal win, she almost repeated history.
Richardson nearly recorded her second “triple double” of her career in the Lightning's victory on Saturday, scoring a game-high 23 points with a game-high 12 rebounds. She also added eight assists and three steals en route to her ninth “double double” of the season.
Ironically enough, the Baltimore, Md. native became the first player to record a “triple double” in Goldey-Beacom women's basketball history when she faced the Eagles during the regular season, scoring 14 points with 11 rebounds and a career-high 12 assists. In the 23-point victory, Richardson made all six of her free throws despite being held to 4-for-12 shooting from the field.
In five career games against the Eagles, Richardson averaged 17.4 points and 10.8 rebounds per outing while shooting 45.8 per cent from the field and 75.6 per cent from the free throw line.
On the Rebound – One of the Lightning's keys to success during the 2012-13 season has been winning the rebounding advantage against their opponents and Saturday's clash against Post was no different. Led by senior guard
Devonne Richardson and junior forward
Briana Richmond-Peters, the Lightning held a commanding 54-33 rebounding edge against Post.
Richardson, who leads the Lightning in scoring and rebounding, grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds while Richmond-Peters, who came into the game averaging 3.9 rebounds per contest, matched her career high with a 10-rebound effort, including eight in the second half.
The 21-rebound margin marked the third-highest margin ever in a single game at the CACC Tournament. On Feb. 28, 2007, Holy Family outrebounded the Eagles by a 50-16 margin while Caldwell had a 23-rebound advantage over Philadelphia University in last year's quarterfinals.
The Lightning have outrebounded their opponents in 16 of the last 19 games.
7-Up – By posting the quarterfinal win over the Eagles on Saturday, the Lightning have defeated Post in seven consecutive meetings, including a pair of affairs this season. With Saturday's win, the Lightning lead the all-time series by an 11-6 margin.
Sweet 16 – The Lightning held Post to just 16 points in the first half on Saturday, marking the fourth time this season Goldey-Beacom has limited an opponent to 16 or fewer points in the opening stanza. The Lightning held Nyack to 16 points on Feb. 13 while limiting Chestnut Hill to 15 points in the first half of their 47-41 victory on Jan. 15.
On Jan. 12, the Lightning kept No. 14 Holy Family to just 12 first half points, but the Tigers rallied in the second half to earn a 47-43 victory.
Bombs Away – Over the last five games, Goldey-Beacom opponents are shooting just 26.2 per cent from beyond the arc and have taken at least 18 three-point field goal attempts in each contest.
The Eagles, which entered the game making 31.7 per cent of their three-point field goal tries, was limited to just 5-for-18 shooting from beyond the arc.
Opponents are shooting 27.1 per cent from three-point range against the Lightning this season, which ranks second in the CACC.
Great Eight – The Lightning improved to 8-0 this year against the CACC North Division. They are the only team to have an unbeaten record against the North Division.
Double-Digit Dynamo – For the seventh consecutive game, senior forward
Irene Hudson tallied at least 10 points for the Lightning after an 11-point effort against the Eagles on Saturday afternoon. A second team All-CACC selection, Hudson has averaged 15.6 points per game, including back-to-back 20-point efforts against Dominican and Philadelphia University.
The Lightning's leading scorer with a 12.8 average, Hudson is also shooting an impressive 49.1 per cent from the field.
Miss Assist – Senior guard
Devonne Richardson has tallied 14 assists in her last two CACC Tournament games. After tying the school CACC Tournament record in last year's quarterfinal loss against Dominican, she broke the record with eight assists against Post on Saturday.
Start Me Up – Senior guard
Jacinda Jones tied the Goldey-Beacom school record by making the 104th start of her college career against the Eagles on Saturday. She now shares the record set by
Toni Jones from 2004-08.
10 Count – Senior forward
Akilah Sewell posted her ninth double-digit scoring effort of the season with 10 points against the Eagles on Saturday afternoon. Sewell, who has scored 10 or more points in a game 27 times in her career, made 4 of 10 shots from the field and both of her foul shots.
Sewell Strikes Silver – In addition to her 10 points and six rebounds, senior forward
Akilah Sewell tallied a pair of blocked shots in the win over Post on Saturday, giving her 50 blocks on the season. It is just the third time in school history that a player has recorded 50 or more blocks in a single season.
During the 2008-09 campaign,
Arielle Alford set the school record with 71 rejections. She also had 53 blocked shots two years ago when the Lightning won the CACC championship.
A Baker's Dozen – Post junior guard
Aubrey Latham, who earned second team All-CACC honors, recorded her 13th consecutive game with 10 or more points after scoring a team-high 20 points against the Lightning on Saturday.
Double Your Pleasure – Post graduate student forward
Monique Chance finished her career on Saturday afternoon by posting her ninth “double double” of the season after scoring 11 points with a game-high 12 rebounds. She made 5 of 16 shots from the floor and had three blocks with two assists.
By the Numbers – The Lightning are now 17-3 this year when leading at the intermission … Goldey-Beacom has held its opponent to under 50 points in 9 of its last 14 games … The Lightning are 13-2 over the last two seasons when holding an opponent to 50 points or less, including a 9-1 mark this year … Post made just three of seven free throws on Saturday, marking the fewest made foul shots by a Goldey-Beacom opponent this season … Latham became the sixth player this season to score 20 or more points against the Lightning.
